I am Francisco, from Brazil.
I am looking for a combination of three replacement pickups for my Strato.
Before you could give me some advices, of course, I would like to tell you all about what kind of sound I am seeking, what kind of stuff I play, and how is my guitar part.
I will start by the latter. I have a Tagima T735 strato. Yes, you have probably never heard about it- although the name is japanese (lots of japanese-brazilians over here), it is a brazilian guitar. It is made of brazilian woods of exceptional quality, and although some of them may sound much like northern-hemisphere, temperate-climate woods like Maple, they are still pretty different and remarkable in terms of sound.
My guitar has a body made of Marupá (Simarouba amara, or simply Simarouba). It is a light wood, with acoustic properties somehow comparable to Basswood. The fretboard is made of a whole piece of Pau Marfim (means "Ivory Wood" in portuguese), which is analogous to maple, but with brighter sound. No lamination.
I am a neck pup player mostly, so I care really a lot about it, and I would like to replace all my three pups. I basically play the following: jazz, fusion, fusionesque renditions of rock (name it prog, or name it fusion), samba-rock, bossa nova fusion and such. As you can see, I am not a huge fan of heavily distorted stuff, although I am a fan of the very early Black Sabbath (definetely the first album). Yet I would like to play all of that, I still would like to keep a nice edge for playing some blues, and some varied rock. I have not been in the mood for metal, and I don't think it will ever come up again. I am more a jazz guy now, I would say. Never been into punk.
I would like to warm it up. Still, I wouldn't like to get far from the vintage strat tone.
To be a lot more specific, I am gonna tell you some considerations I have about pickups, and about what I have heard about Seymour Duncan pickups.
I thought initially about a set up consisting of Little 59 (N), Cool Rails or Vintage Rails (M), JB Jr (B). It would be, in theory, versatile yet with a whole lot or personality. I really, really liked the sound of the duckbucker samples from the website for the neck position, however, I have heard bad things about these, specially from users from Harmony Central.
Although I have never heard the Antiquity series (or, better, I think I haven't ever heard them), they looked temptating. I have, however, a couple of objections- I really don't know if they would fit my needs, and also, I fear them being too noisy, although there are ways to evade that (but which ones??).
Also, what do you guys think about a couple of JSMs and a HS3 on the bridge?
