NGD yesterday! I bought that LPJ, put my trusted DR strings on it 10-52 and gone is the brightness I got last weekend in store. This guitar sounds huge unplugged now
I plugged it in my Eleven Rack yesterday night, sounded good on a Marshall JCM800 but as OP said the neck pickup lacks clarity on the big strings, bridge sounded good by raising it a bit. Sounded good but not nice on low gain amps (Vox, Fender, Hiwatt) and sounded terrible on high gain amps (Bogner, Mesa). The pickups lack roundness and sweetness I expect out of a Les Paul.
I measured each pickups at 7.8K (out of output jack, full volume/tone). Still thinking Pearly Gates set or as OP Slash set.

I have a PAF 36th Anniversary set w/ push/pulls (split) in my '84 LPC and they can cover literally just about anything.
Very dynamic, clear, good note separation, and clean up with the volume knob superbly.
In the middle position with both pickups split, it's clean tone heaven.
Another thing I really like about em is they (especially the bridge) have a P90-type grunt to them (huge P90 fan) -- raunchy as f**k :headbang:

Worse. Nobody has asked what amplification the OP uses. This, more than any other single factor, might explain why a decent guitar sounds unsatisfactory.

Since I'm asking same as OP, should I open a new thread to not hijack this one?
I play thru an Avid Eleven Rack connected to PA speakers at gigs and PA speaker or tube power amp/4x12" cab at home depending on the mood. I want that guitar to sound rounder with more mids (mids are missing and a bit bright acoustically maybe because of maple neck). From classic rock to hard rock (GnR but without going to Iron Maiden/Metalica territory). No bass mudiness and no piercing highs. I'm looking for medium-low output (DC resistance near 9K) as the one in that guitar is a bit shy at 7.8K (I know dc resistance is not equal to output but it's just a reference).
Deciding on Slash set or Dimarzio 36th Anniversary set. Slash seems hother but 36th seems to have more mids.

OP, I just adjusted the '61 humbuckers and they sound real nice now. I suggest you spend some time with a screw driver before changing them.
I opened a thread on adjusting pickups and the guys help suggestions helped me a lot to achieve a really nice tone out of those '61.

I think I will definitely try an A2 in them before ditiching $225 on a Slash set + $50 on pots/caps + another $75 on labor!!!
