Pickups similar to the Custom?

I know there are many many many JB-inspired pickups. But how about the Custom? Which pickups are similar to it?

:)

I believe Rex means the sound and similar kindo construction. 4K dcr with matched coils, ceramic magnet etc.

The Super Distortion. There are rumors that the Custom is Seymour's take on the Super Distortion. 43 awg, similar DCR, ceramic (double thick in DMZ, regular in the SH5). Just a rumor. Of cours. Tonally, no idea. I do not like the Custom.

I think we hear the same thing, the Custom with double ceramic sounds very much like a Super Distortion to me.

Ah, yeah, I remember hearing about that now. It's related to the theory that it was originally made for EVH, right?

I'm on the fence about the Custom. I love the sizzly top-end. I wouldn't mind the scooped mids if the balance was a bit less towards it being bassy, though. But it is what it is. At that point, it might start getting into Dimebucker territory, and I don't like that at all. It's cool to have it around for a different flavor as it is.

Well, any of the Custom variations of course. Thing is, as far as sound, I don't think anything in the SD catalog sounds quite like a Custom. High output pickups changed a lot since the Custom was created, and popular heavy guitar sounds changed along with it.

I distinctly remember you could custom floor order the Custom 8. Is that still a thing?

Just a thought and I could be way off, but would a Custom/59 hybrid with a ceramic mag get you closer to the tone you are after? Feels like the C/59 has a good midrange to it.

PRS HFS, some Paul Reed players who prefer PAF types don't like it, I for one love it! Quite similar to the Custom, about 15k, 43 gauge wire and a ceramic mag...killer pup in my book and still one of my faves.I put one in a Les Paul years ago as well as numerous PRSs over the years. I hunt down the ones that still have conventional bobbins because I am not a fan of the "squabbins" on the current ones, matter of taste on that. Also the SE version of the HFS still sounds great to me but is no longer made for any production guitar. They pop up on Reverb/eBay now and again but caveat- the SE ones don't have any identifier/marking on them and other than the DC there's no way to confirm it's an HFS.

To date, I haven't played a pickup that sounded like the Custom. It has a unique tone profile, IME. But the Custom itself can cross over into other pickup sounds with the right guitar and amp setup, for example, the "PAF on steroids" is an apt name in a Les Paul through a NMV Marshall that has the presence and treble rolled back a bit. Through a sizzly amp like later Marshalls it can sound like a tamer Distortion.
