Pinched harmonics

Well I'm sure this must have been asked before but I can't see it.
I am getting sooooooo frustrated trying to get a good pinched harmonic!.
I thought itcould have been from noiseless pups but still can get them even with my SSL-5 in the bridge.
I am trying on the G string fretting at the 7th fret the bridge pup selected and I'm picking just in front of the middle pickup.
I try with lots of gain but cannot get it.
I'm picking quite hard and touching the string with the fleshy part of the thumb just afrer the pick.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks guys!

Re: Pinched harmonics

Try picking closer to the neck pickup.

what kind of pickups are loaded in the guitar..? some pickups just are a pain to do artificial harmonics on,while others are a breeze..

Re: Pinched harmonics

Could just be the guitar too. I have to struggle with my Ibanez AS-83 Semi-Hollow (with P-Rails) to get a decent pinch harmonic out of it, yet my RG3EXFM1 (with GFS Dream 180s) gives 'em to me with barely a thought. :dunno:

Semi hollows do tend to not get very good pinch harmonics, but I am still able to coax them out of my semi hollows.

Re: Pinched harmonics

I can get pinch harmonics without using a pick, just my fingernails. The weaker the pickup and lower the gain, the more precise the placement must be.

Re: Pinched harmonics

Practice.

Move along the string from as close as the bridge as possible to the last fret and back again. You'll find the "sweet spot" eventually and muscle memory will eventually take over.

Play along to a ton of ZZ Top and WASP's first 2 albums with Chris Holmes to truly master pinch harmonics. Billy Gibbons does one section of a solo where he's holding a single fretted note and changing the pitch of the harmonic merely by changing where he picks it.

The second solo to La Grange is played that way.

Neck is fat 50
Middle is CS69
Bridge is SSL-5
Just edited my original post as it should have said using the BRIDGE pickup

Thanks for the tips! Appreciated

Re: Pinched harmonics

Yes, it is usually just technique..the right level of gain, and a lot of practice. With practice, you can get them on any pickup, anywhere you pick.

yea.. lots of practice..

in saying that.. .. its significantly harder to get A.H. out of a single coil IMO. I have found actives to be the easiest

Re: Pinched harmonics

Keep practicing until you can get them easily on any pickup, and with clean tones, and then keep practicing until you can do two at once on adjacent strings and frets (though it is more difficult to do that with clean tones).
