Pine Tele Build

ehdwuld

A Ficus
When I was at Brutha Jer's back in November
He presented me with a gift
A Pine Tele body with this cool leather pickguard

The back

The edges are hard and square

So I thought I would cut me a tummy cut and a forearm carve

My new neck showed up this week
Got this one of Amazon for $29
Probably gonna swap the nut for a black TusqXL

Got some black tuners that came off my Ibanez when those went to locking tuners
They are an exact fit for the tuner holes
I have some chrome tuners from a Squire that are smaller like the Ibanez ones
And I have the MIM tuners off my strat again when those went locking
These may end up locking but we will see
The MIM tuners are one size bigger and would need the holes to be reamed
I think the black ones will work better anyways

When I finish, I'll probably remove the finish and wipe it with tung oil

More to come

Re: Pine Tele Build

Planning to remove all the hardware
And ferrels on the back
Make carves
Then run over it rest to remove the old finish

Re: Pine Tele Build

Sweet! So a Longhorn guard and is that mark supposed to be a brand or the symbol for Pi? ;)

Looks like a cool project! IMO, pine looks awesome torched/roasted Enjoy!

Re: Pine Tele Build

Looks like pi
Probably gonna loose it when the forearm carve is complete
Longhorn stays

Re: Pine Tele Build

Looks like a fun project. The forearm and belly contours are an outstanding idea. My Tele doesn't have them and I wish it did.

Re: Pine Tele Build

No, Ehdwuld, I do not mind...I'm interested to see the makeover.

I'm actually considering a Northen aged Pine body..they have some Barnwood pine thats over a hundred years old, but I don't wanna try finishing nothing no more..maybe if it'll take Tru -oil? Maybe U need to put some sealer before applying the tru-oil cause the grain is so pourous. Thats one thing I wanted to say..If u don't know about pine, I mean pine thats not really old and the resins have crystalized, it'll be a gooey mess when u try to sand the stuff I think .

I think the old barnwood Pine would have properties similar to Ash, and be great for a set of '55 low output Strat pickups.

Re: Pine Tele Build

Tru Oil and Tung Oil are sealers
It is in fact the sealant used on the woodwork of old sailing ships

Re: Pine Tele Build

That brand looks 1/8" deep.

Yeah it is pretty danged deep
It seems to dig in closer to the bridge
I'm gonna try to level that out if I can
I want the bridge to sit flat though
So it may still be a remnant when finished

We'll see

Re: Pine Tele Build

FYI, the original Esquires were almost 1/4" thinner than what we know today as Fender's standard width. G&L makes their guitars the same way, and because I love it so much, it's the width I now use for all of my Tele/Esquire builds. It slims down the body, making a tummy cut unnecessary (IMO), and also has the side benefit of reducing the bare body's weight by about 15 percent.

Point being, you could plane the body down to eliminate the brand (or at least the overwhelming majority of it), deepen the routs by the same amount, and still end up with a perfectly usable (if not better feeling) guitar.

Re: Pine Tele Build

So went to sand it of and that's work
Went with the chemical peal

Then sanded it back
That brand just wasn't coming off

It sanded out a bit
Got the color out a bit anyway
Still deep gouges

Laid out in mock up

One coat of tung oil drying

I think maybe three coats should do
Don't think I will have to coat the neck
It was sold as unfinished so maybe just a bit
One or two coats

Whadda ya'll think?

Re: Pine Tele Build

Man , that is outstanding!
( BTW, are those the same blue gloves you gave me my free prostate exam with while you were here?)

I love the clear look as is ,and If I am not mistaken, every finish yellows besides 'Varithane Crystal Clear', but you might want a finish that will "age". Also, no need to keep that pickguard if you think a different on might look best.

Keep us posted.
