Re: pink floyd thing - how's my tone now?

Very intense tone. You are totally in the pink floyd ball park. There are a few simple things tho that would make you own that gilmour tone.

1 - The distortion was a little edgy for floyd tone. I would try something not less distorted, but probably more rounded and smoother, less agressive.

2- Slow the shredding down lol. A lot of gilmour's tone comes from the weight and patience that he gives to each individual note. Dave's always been about patience and mood in my mind, and I think that would really help you get that style

IMO, if you try that out, I think your next clip will be right on.

Re: pink floyd thing - how's my tone now?

thanks for the comments. i'm NOT trying to get the floyd tone though. it just seemed like fun to mess around with the comfortably numb thing a little. i just want to get a good tone for all around rock soloing and rhythm.

to be quite honest, i've never been one to try and get somebody's sound. i don't even like to play cover music because i get bored. it's like by the time i rehearse a song and play it almost note for note, it's not fun to play anymore. other than that, i'd like some feedback on my tone in general. thanks.

Setup? Nice tone!

who ever said that EMGs are toneless? that's B.S.! it's a gilmour set with a tube combo and a distortion pedal. the distortion is only set halfway, but it gets real good saturation just with that.

honestly though, next time i would just go with and sa set and the spc control. to me, the exp control thins it out and makes it sound kind of tinny like a tele or something. in any case, those EMGs rock. anyone who says they suck hasn't really given them a chance, applied them to the right music, guitar, or whatever.

thanks for the feedback frank. i always like your stuff man, so coming from you it's great to hear. that regatta jam kicks ass

What kind of amp though?

traynor ycv40wr vintage model. i was back and forth between that and the kustom 36 for a while (both of which have great friggin tone), but settled on the traynor. i have another little clip that i did with the kustom and it think it's called music loop 1 or something if you're interested in hearing that amp. that kustom sounds all tube, very warm and plenty of gain. the traynor is much smoother which is good for fast playing an blues/jazz stuff, but lacks the kind of sharp crunch that you can coax out of the kustom.

this is how i do a pink floyd tone. Two sinle coil pick-ups in the out of phase position with the tone of the one pick-up turned down. play around with your own settings to get to the right level. Then you need good reverb and some overdriver or distortion set to a low level. it is better to crank the amp than to increase the gain on the pedal.

I can actually hear the strings on the fretboard on your recording; not good. Your guitar is set up for playing fast, I guess, but the tone will increase if you set the strings just that fraction higher.

of the solo on Brick in the Wallpart 2, Gilmour actully used a Les Paul, so there is a way to get a similar tone with humbuckers. i must add, thought, that, in Dave's words, he had a hard time getting a decent tone out of the thing. Having sid that, most of the recordings on his new solo were done with a Les Paul. There is a fair amount of mid-range on the Dave Gilmour sound, so do not be afraid to use it. Especially if you have an EQ that can sweep the mids into the right range.

Can you verify that? That solo sounds very stratty under alot of compression. Not to mention the 2 step bends would be harder to do on a LP then a strat.
