Pinky: Using Pinky Above 12th Fret

Re: Pinky: Using Pinky Above 12th Fret

I think he means when bending only the 2nd string up to grind with the unbent 1st string. Like unison bending but not into actual unison notes.

I thought that “might” be what he meant but I wasn’t sure. Lol

If that’s the case....I use different fingers.

That's one thing I never do, but then again on the 2nd and 3rd strings you can get the same effect but not be on the same fret, but since I use a wound 3rd (albeit a tiny wound) it doesn't really work as well.

Re: Pinky: Using Pinky Above 12th Fret

I try to keep each finger dedicated to its own fret regardless of hand position on the neck. But I call my little finger Runt and sometimes Shrimpy because it gets offended by the term Pinky ... as if I'm calling it a commie or accusing it of batting for another team.

Honestly, I can play easily with index, middle and shrimpy. I am terribly awkward playing with index, ring and shrimpy. The simple explanation for this is lack of practice.

Leslie West never needed a pinky. Hell, he'll tell you he doesn't use his ring finger either but I'm pretty sure I've seen him use it once in a while. ;)

I mostly play that way, middle being the weakest link.

I really should try to add more middle finger in my playing!

Practice your trills with all fingers. 0 1, 1 2, 2 3, 3 4. And Hammer ons 1234, 4321.

Trills and hammr ons I can do with anything. Pull ups too, but needs bit more care.

It's the fast notes downward the scales where middle finger seems to "get in the way" more than being useful.

Re: Pinky: Using Pinky Above 12th Fret

I have always used my pinky. Never thought about it I just use it.

The way I play I need every advantage I can get.:biglaugh:

Re: Pinky: Using Pinky Above 12th Fret

My advice: don't overthink it. Do what feels natural.

I use it myself, though it probably gets less a bit less fret time than the other three. And I tend use the little guy up high as well as lower on the neck, but I have relatively thin fingers. I can see how if my fingers were bigger it might get in the way when space is tight.

As many have observed, there are some iconic players that do just fine without using their pinky at all. They mostly hail from a time when it was all about blues licks though- seems to me scales would be more difficult with only three fingers. Not impossible, but why complicate things unnecessarily?

I actually started to use my pinky right in the beginning because of that. I couldn't play the open A in standard way so i used fingers from middle to pinky. I still can't squeeze fingers from index to third to play same fret even with strat scale.

Re: Pinky: Using Pinky Above 12th Fret

My ring finger is so much stronger and faster than my pinky that I try to use it whenever I can. If it will reach where I need to go I try to use my ring finger in lieu of my pinky.
