Re: PLAIN ENEMEL 44 AWG WIRE ?????

PE AWG#44 wire do exists, although I don't know of any p'up brand actually using it in their production.

"red wire gauge"? Are you referring to the red-colored wire found on some pickups?

As for the "how do we know" on the most common models...we have accounts from employees at SD, pickup winders and some of our own forum members who have taken the time to pull many of these pickups apart and capture their specs.

Even by SD's own account, 42 AWG (Pearly Gates, '59, '78, etc), 43 AWG (Screamin' Demon, Custom series, etc) and 44 AWG (JB, Distortion, Invader, etc) are the most common wire gauges used by SD.

The RTM, Super V and similar pickups have higher resistance specs, but relatively low to moderate output characteristics due to even thinner wire gauges.

42, 43, 44 are common wire gauges used. pe, formvar, spn tend to be the common insulations. there are variations of those combos used by most pup winders from me who winds in my basement through dimarzio and duncan who sell thousands and thousands of pups. sometimes you can tell by color but when you get to #44 there is pe wire that looks very similar to spn since it can be any color you want and everything is so thin

I posted a pic of the Custom Shop "The Hunter", which had the same red wire. Who knows!

Does it really matter?

You're not likely to hear from anyone at SD on these forums. They pop in only rarely.
