The store where I spend a lot of money got in 2 new models of the G&L Tribute line. They are the Legacy Special which adds a bridge humbucker to the Legacy model and the new dual humbucker fixed-bridge Invader XL.
Lets focus on the new kid in town the Invader. THe XL is the premium level and comes with a mahogany body, "Saddle Lok" bridge, bolt-on maple neck with thick rosewood slab fretboard. This model uses two humbuckers that are designed and made in the G&L Fender Ave factory. The pickups seem to be hot, althoughI did not have enough time to get to know them well. THat will take another visit.
The guitar has a bit of mass to it, mahogany body you know, but it is not too heavy. This Tribute was well set-up, the frets were well finished and nor fret buzz could be found. Some Tributes I have tried needed a set-up or a fret level and dress because fret buzz issues. This particular Invader had a medium to high action whic is my preference. This guitar also had sustain to burn. Put that down to the great bridge design, mahogany body and tight neck pocket. THe thing sustained better than my Les Paul and better than a few neck-throughs I have played.
I will get back to do a follow-up on the tone of the guitar, give the pickups a real workout and try it through several amps. More to follow...
