Played a McCarty

Wow. Very nice guitar. Went to GC on lunch here in Chicago. (Arlingon Heights actually) I'm trying to decide what guitar I want to get next. Its between an LP Standard Premium Plus, Hamer Monaco Elite, or PRS McCarty. (Oh God, saying that now I want all THREE!!!!!) I played both the LP and McCarty at GC and I dunno. Both were really nice, but maybe I liked the McCarty a bit more. But oh well, good decisions to make! I still have to find a Hamer somewhere in Chicago to play, heh they're hard to find here.

Question for someone who knows PRS. The McCarty I played had a sanded down neck kind of...can't quite describe it. Like not the gloss finish, just plain. I actually liked that a lot better than a gloss one, but what kind of McCarty is that? Anyone know? (guess I should have checked at GC!) Only options I see on PRS website is for an Indian Rosewood fretboard, but I don't think thats it.

Re: Played a McCarty

If it wasn't a bolt-on, and it had a satin finished neck, or nude wood neck, someone modded it and killed the value. I play strats a lot too, but I think my favorite humbucking guitars are LP Std Prem + with 50's neck, and the McCarty.
The McCarty has a neck that is absolutely perfect, IMO. You can play it for hours with minimal hand discomfort. It sounds just as good as my Pauls, too. With the stock pickups, it has it's own sweet vintage tone. If you go with Duncans, it puts the tone a lot closer to a Gibson with the same pickups. If I were forced to own one guitar for the rest of my life, it'd by my Dark Vintage Sunburst 2000 McCarty. It's got a neck to die for, and has a great unplugged natural resonant tone.

Re: Played a McCarty

I just got a 2001 PRS McCarty 10 Top with factory Duncan P-90's for my wife. I can't say enough about it. Beautiful finish, very comfy neck, great pickups of course!

...and more Tone capabilities than a Paul. The PRS McCarty is more of a "Tone Specialist" guitar than the traditional Paul. I've been an LP junkie for 24 years but i take my hats off to the PRS McCarty. :notworthy

I think it was new though. The neck just didn't have a gloss finish on it. I don't know that's the only way I can explain it! Not a huge deal for me either way. Yeah I liked both the Stnd LP Prem Plus and the McCarty alot, but I'm leaning toward the McCarty. Well in the near future heh. I don't think my wife would let me get both! :yell:

Re: Played a McCarty

Check Ebay. They cost $2200 new, but I always see someone sacrificing one for $1300. I got my teal black flametop w/moons for $1325 BIN + shipping.

Wow, I didnt know you could score them for that cheap!
Your starting to make me think of a McCarty...

Re: Played a McCarty

I bought my first McCarty, darkburst soapbars, for $1000 used. They are out there.

I'm betting he played a rosewood neck.

Re: Played a McCarty

dude, go with the PRS. the quality alone should be the deciding factor. the mccarty will also provide you with a wider tonal pallette. the PRS is jsut the better guitar of the two. also, i advocate boycotting corrupt corporate scum, so gibson is on my shiite list.

Re: Played a McCarty

over at the www.birdsandmoons.com forum, they call rosewood 'crackwood' for a reason ... :D

i only have my mccarty with brazilian rosewood fingerboard over indian rosewood neck to go by, but i cant imagine owning a PRS without a rosewood neck/fingerboard .. it feels and sounds that good ...

that ebay one is nice looking - wonder wwhat the reserve is

good luck

Re: Played a McCarty

i always tried to like PRS's, but i simply couldn't. I hate those rotary switches too. I couldn't swallow its tone-it didn't have its own voice like telecasters, strats, SG's, or les pauls do, so it never seemed to speak to me.

I'm glad you're happy with the Deep Blue Sea. I feel like I've been through a divorce or something and my best friend hooked up with my ex-old lady! Hahaha!

Play her in good health. She was sitting in her case for a long time at my casa.

Re: Played a McCarty

So then the one I like is with the Indian rosewood neck? It did feel SO nice when I played it.

Re: Played a McCarty

I"ve never seen a natural set neck PRS that wasn't rosewood. Did it feel as smooth as a baby's bottom? ;)

I don't know about that! But man it was nice. I'm still having dreams about that guitar....

Re: Played a McCarty

Jeff, I have a 2003 LP Standard with Burstbucker Pros and it is fantastic! I also bought a used 2001 blackburst McCarty that has been modified with hotter and sligthleyt thicker and more cutting pickups by True Tone pickups. I am starting to really like these more than the Mccarty pickups although those are sweet! These sound like a fat Dragon II or warmer Dragon II.
I got the McCarty for $1450 in mint condition - looks showroom new. You can find em fore sure.

I had two Hamers, Studio and Mirage but could never bond with em like my PRS or Gibson. Next up for me will be a Historic R7 and a PRS CE-22!

Re: Played a McCarty

I pulled my McCarty auction after T4D said he wanted it. I've had about 12 legitimate inquiries since then as to when/if I was going to relist it. ;)
