Played guitar for the first time in weeks

so between yesterday and today, i've been playing my guitar about an hour and a half per day. (Having a job, and no school, for the time being, is a nice thing.) And I noticed that my playing as a result of the time away from my strat allowed me to re-enter with passion and fun. It started with a note, then some scales and chords, and then solos and improv stuff. :friday:

I know i'll always suck relative to the lot, but I just enjoyed being able to re-acquaint with my stratocaster. It just felt so great, like re-connecting with an old friend. I'll never rid myself of this strat, it's that good - even if it is a bit of a mutt in terms of upgrades.

Re: Played guitar for the first time in weeks

those moments are cool - the bug infected me a while back after 20+ years of just occasional playing. Glad to hear it!

Re: Played guitar for the first time in weeks

Yup. Time away from the instrument = massive inspiration. I force myself to take time off because of it. :D

Re: Played guitar for the first time in weeks

I've had the same thing recently. I had nearly a month of no playing at all. It was odd. Glad to hear you're back on it though!

I always feel depressed if I dont get to play for a few days.. glad you got ....... Are you ready for it??? You know I gotta be corny.....

Reunited and it feels so good......

Song makes me hurl, but fit here...haha

Yup... cuz we understood :D

I graduated and I have time now to play. So I took my strat out and decided to go nuts. I was amazed how fight my strat has. I had forgotten that if you play gently, she won't do beans... but if you dig and show "who's boss", it's great. I also forgot just how tight everything is... and how much sustain the guitar actually has. (Almost too much.) Makes me appreciate those little quirks all over again. I even found myself playing Misirlou in full-bridge and enjoying the distortion and overdriving the snarfs out of the amp.

Zappa was right... Shut up n play yer guitar.

Apparently all the "not playing due to school and work paid off"

I am officially a graduate student at Brooklyn College!

:D

Re: Played guitar for the first time in weeks

I took two or so years off now it's almost like I have to relearn this stuff. Sucks.

Re: Played guitar for the first time in weeks

i dont really play at all unless its at a rehearsal for something.
I like to think it keeps me excited about playing.

Re: Played guitar for the first time in weeks

I haven't felt the need to even pick one up for a week or so now. I usually feel the need when i'm at work since i'd rather be doing that than working, but that changes when I do get home and they stay on a stand or in a case.

Re: Played guitar for the first time in weeks

Breaks can be good. Lots of good stuff comes out after not having picked up the axe for awhile. Too long, not good. Little bits can do wonders though.

Re: Played guitar for the first time in weeks

I'm going through something similar with my re-connection having started a few days ago. It truly is a great feeling. Don't lose it though ;)

Which is true up to a point, as it's easy to fall into a rut. But if there's difficult things to learn and develop, requiring muscle memory and finger strength, the more you play the better. I couldn't do all the bends, or have the speed I do if I didn't practice a lot. I keep from getting in a rut by learning new songs, solos, and riffs on a regular basis. There's always something I want to learn how to play and it's nice to be able to keep adding to my repetoire.

It depends what you're playing and where you want to get.

If you play simple pop rock stuff then there's no real need to play guitar every day.
If you want to play anything with a bit of substance then I think you really need to be playing every day, even just for a short while.

The only time I don't play guitar every day is when I'm on holiday, and even then, I will listen to guitar music and wish I had one with me. Next time we go on holiday I'll be taking my mandolin with me.

You guys spend too much time on this forum. Post less, play more! That's been my motto that past couple years and I've grown exponentially in my playing. Being in a band and listening to more Frank Zappa and more Jazz were big contributions to my growth too.

+1. To be an above-average musician, you have to possess the physical ability to transfer ideas to reality. That doesn't happen by not practicing. Doesn't matter what's going on in your head if your fingers can't perform the tasks. Playing a variety of rich, complicated chords or solos doesn't happen without dedication.

Varg: I picked up a headless Steinberger that's only about 2 feet long, so I can take it when I travel. Easily fits in an overhead airline compartment.

That would be cool, I see them for sale sometimes but, with a 4 year old I wouldnt get playing it enough to justify the purchase. I already have a mandolin though. :headbang:

It's a Spirit model, Asian-made, so they don't cost much. I ended up playing it at a blues jam when I went to Sedona, Arizona last fall.
