Played my first tube amp yesterday.

Re: Played my first tube amp yesterday.

I'll look into those, but what I don't want to do, is spend money on "collectible" nonsense. The little Fender Pro Juniour looks good too.

I was thinking more of you building one of the above, not buying.

Although...... I have a '74 Princeton Reverb (SF) and it is fantastic...just a player's amp. ....Not vintage/collectible.
I think that it is a fantastic little amp. Someone put a 12" speaker in mine before I got it.

Re: Played my first tube amp yesterday.

Got the same amp...well...the H&K Edition tube 20. GREAT clean channel...and a whole lotta fun to play with. Loud as hell too.

AFAIK, that little "rattle" you noticed is pretty normal. Mine's got it...though it hasn't since I changed the tubes last. I expect if I blast those tubes enough it'll come back though.

Artie, what kind of music are you into? Try a Classic 30. I know you have love for Peavey things.

My friend has a Classic 30 head and it is great. He runs it into a homemade pine cab with a 12" speaker.

Blues/Jazz/Rock . . . after hearing 20, I'd be afraid to move up to 30. I was looking for a Classic 20 for awhile. Now I'm thinking . . . 5. ;)

Re: Played my first tube amp yesterday.

Get yourself a Epiphone Valve Junior, and then Mod the **** out of it. It'll cost ya less then trying to do a kit, and with your electronics knowledge I think you'de be able to mod it into whatever ya wanted (within reason). And they sound pretty good stock anyways.

Re: Played my first tube amp yesterday.

ArtieToo..is 5 watts going to give you enough headroom when you jam with friends? Especially if you invite a drummer!

What about something in the 15 to 18 watt neighbourhood?

Hey AT,

That's like having prime rib for the first time. : party:

Your pocketbook will never be the same. :banghead:

Re: Played my first tube amp yesterday.

Nah, just click the link in Scott's siggy, and drop down to 15W.

Artie I know I speak for quite a few other folks as well when I say welcome to the world of tubes! Also I'm waiting for you to announce your first amp build!

Re: Played my first tube amp yesterday.

I am, I am. I just gotta find a 1-watt schematic. That AX84 Firefly, (5 watts), is looking pretty good about now.

Glad that you've "heard" the light, Artie. :)

That's why I want to save my pennies for a Carr Mercury with the built in attenator....8 watts, 2 watts, 1/2 watt and 1/10 watt. I wonder if any of the Forum Bros build something similar?
