yeah, its ash alright. Somewhere i read that he used basswood with the maple top to closely resemble ash. I dont know if that is right though.

When he first designed the EB guitar it was plain Basswood body... a later prototype had a maple cap and Ed liked the extra bit of brightness the maple added

The EB guitar was in design before he even signed on with them. He didn't design much of it other than choosing the pickups with Steve Lukather.

this i heard is true. HE chose from EBMM's palette . About the woods i dont know. But i am sure he didnt want to stray too much from his original Franky sound.
