Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

P90s are ok. I like P90s... Looking back I reallized no one has actually said anything about routing it for a humbucker though, so that makes people here a little more ok ;)

That was me... I would route one out for a P-90... the hole would probably be hidden under that little pickguard flange if I ever wanted to put the original p-up back in.

:D

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

:nana: Well I'll likely be owning a few and one will most definitely get routed for buckers. One of my fave guitars is an old SC MM Brian Damage from KIX has, it's got pups from a '71 LP Custom in it so I'll be doing something like that at some point for sure.

I imagine if they keep the price down in that range I'll become and MM whore!

Anyone not understanding or appreciating the joys of a dirt simple, minimalistic guitar I send you my condolences.

btw I played at least a dozen of the LP MM's and only had one dog and even then I am sure it could have been set up quite easily. The Faded finishes start out a little rough but the play down and break in beautifully. I wasn't a huge fan of the difference in tone between the Santa-whatever/Spanish Cedar woods they used so I didn't keep mine but it was far from a quality issue, purely a tone issue.

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

Hmm, i'd love to put a swimming pool rout in that and slap 4 humbuckers side by side in it. All on, all the time, no switches. Maybe a Floyd Rose too.

Ha ha, sorry dangly, coudn't resist.

I'd be very interested in one of these absolutely stock. Grip it and rip it, no nonsense. Like the idea very much.

Dude, come on. Give me a break. :laugh2:

:nana:

All nitpicking and silliness aside, anyone who is curious should check these out. This one I played is great, but maybe it was hand picked for Haynes or his tech? Grab one off the racks and try it out. You might have a winner.

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

I want one of these things sooooo bad. I cant wait to start seeing them in stores around here.

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

I'm patiently waiting for the local shops to get one in myself. I really like the simplicity of these. A buddy of mine in CA bought one (it was an original single-cut) and slapped a humbucker in it. It needed something and there were no inexpensive replacements at the time. The stock pickup was shot. He tossed a '59 in there and it turned in to a fire breathing monster. Beat to hell but it sounded incredible.

does anyone know what the body depth of the new MM is? is it similar to an LP jr or thinner like the recent tune-o-matic MMs?

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

It is thin like the originals which is thinner than the recent LPMM's not sure the exact depth.

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

Yeah, those old school Gibson Les Paul Juniors and Specials were real jokes, weren't they?

....about the straight tailpiece, I'm just saying, why repeat a poor design flaw just because it was done that way 50 years ago. Gibson threw something together back then trying to make a buck, and I know they may have had good tone, but the intonation will never be close to correct. I just thought a pre-compensated wraparound like the ones on a PRS would make more sense in today's day and age. Its not like anyone is going to mistake these things for vintage anyway.

Whatever though...... I'm sure many Gibson devotees will be thrilled to continue playing "vintagely" out of tune.

While we are on design flaws, Perhaps Fender should think about shipping new Teles with the input jack "Vintagely" hanging out of the guitar so you don't have to wait for it to work loose and fall out on its own. :laugh2:

No no, you make a good point. I'm not sure why they went with the straight uncompensated tail piece there. It's not like they don't have the compensated ones.

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

Lucky you.

The 5-7 of them I played in various stores felt like unfinished practice runs for new Gibson employees that had somehow accidentally been boxed and shipped instead of bandsawed.

There's usually a good one or two to be found in any heap, though. Sounds like you found one.

There were three there. Even though I wouldn't call the other two unfinished practice runs, I definitely got the best of the bunch. Gibson quality has historically been inconsistent, so I guess nothing is new there. I seem to hear more and more complaints about Gibson quality though. It is a shame for such a former giant to be limping along like that.

It's so they save money by shipping out the low-quality part, and make money buy selling the high-quality part only to people who care. That way you get to buy the crappy bridge AND the good one.

Thanks for the info wildstar.

What if I told you I would put a hotrails in it?? :D

Re: Played the new Gibson Melody Maker!

I would not even consider a pickup change until you plug it in. Gibson Single coils are generally very good. The P90's that come in the specials are pretty great sounding pickups. I would consider putting a Antiquity P90 in that bad boy though. That sucker will really come to life with a P90.
