played the supersonic today

Looking for Real Life
i was more impressed with it than the rest of you i guess, the bassman tone stays real clean, the vibrolux tone is dead on & has a nice natural OD, and the burn channel is perfect for rock & roll

Re: played the supersonic today

I think it was an amp that didn't quite hit me up front

Hey, many amps don't
Sometimes I go in with preconceptions and miss the vibe.

I kinda thought the Burn channel was fuzzy, kinda like a fuzz pedal, less than it was Marshall-y or smooth like a Boogie Mark I/II

The clean did nail some ncie tones, but damn the Virbolux was bright, I only felt the Bassman was sweet, and even then - I wanted a mid control, and I didn't feel it made up for not having a real Vibrolux or Bassman (I happen to like the LTD model, or a real 50s/60s one of course).

Re: played the supersonic today

I had some errands to run today, so I stopped in at a couple music stores, and finally got to play the 1-12 Supersonic in black/gray.

It's pretty much exactly what I thought it'd be, which is a very versatile Fender combo with a better gain channel than almost any other Fender. I really like the dual gain knobs on the OD channel, since you can dial them in unison to pinpoint a certain tone. I'd probably opt for the head version, since I like head/2-12 setups more. However, the combo seems to be a great amp to own as your home amp or a lightweight full featured combo to take to clubs. At $1100 it's not cheap, but it's not overpriced either.

Re: played the supersonic today

I was pretty impressed. Like GJ says, the gain channel is about as good as anything Fender has done.

I have yet to try it hands-on but the guy demoing it at NAMM got convincing classic Boogie tones as well as more modern Recto-like sizzle.

Is the dirt channel hipper then the Tone-Sucker head & Pro-Sonics from a few years back? Neither of those amps sound great to me...way too bright & fizzy even with buckers.

I had a chance to play through a 1x12 combo the other day but didn't...I was checking out guitars in "acoustic" mode. I still want to check one out though since I'm kinda unsure about the Rivera Rake. It's a great amp but I dunno...I have a love/hate relationship with it so I figured I'd put it up here & see if there's any tire kickers. I keep going back to single channel amps with multiple dirt & OD boxes...maybe I've moved beyond channel switching amps.

GEARJONESER do you like the SUPER more than older Fenders such as real Bassman amps?

Re: played the supersonic today

wasn't a question for me but i'll answer it

truth be told, i think the brown vibroluxes & blonde bassman's were the best ones, if i'm right these are both '66 models, or maybe one's '68, i dunno, but, obviously the real thing would be better because of the extra channel, but the nice thing about the supersonic is that there's a clean clean, there's a clean that's meant to be OD'd, and then there's an all out distortion

I played it with a strat, tele, gretsch duo jet, and a gretsch brian setzer 6120. All sounded good

Re: played the supersonic today

Drew, did you play a combo or the head...if a head, what cab was it hooked up to?

I'm off tomorrow & was gonna look at a few Fenders & thought I'd add this to the list.

i played 2 heads, the black one through a mesa 2x12, and the blonde one through the matching 2x12. Blonde sounded better, and looked setzer as ****, kickback cab & all

Re: played the supersonic today

I heard a few sound clips on The Gear Page. I thought it sounded really good. Didn't sound thin or fizzy at all. I haven't played one in person yet but it's definitely on the tryout list.

Re: played the supersonic today

i NEED to play one of these too!!! it sounds like what i'm looking for in amp!?

Terry if you play one before i do...let me know your thoughts!

I'd probably go with the head and 212 setup too!

+1 I saw one and it's one of the best lookers I've seen.

Re: played the supersonic today

yeah, it's one of those rigs you feel obligated to play a beautiful guitar through. I put back the strat cuz it looked too plain & went back for the 6120 hahaha

though the 6120 sounded/played better anyways

Guy I know has an old 61 blond Fender Bassman with matching cab...that thing is so rockabilly that it makes me sick! :) I wish I could get it from him, but he's not inclined to sell it at all

Re: played the supersonic today

you see em on ebay from time to time

if you really want one i'd check there every few days

Re: played the supersonic today

OK OK maybe I will give this thing another listen.

I am looking for a nice small, portable clean combo.

I can't say I like the price.

The thing with most Vintage style amps is that they have a better fundamental sound, but that's all they do, so you need to find the right OD pedal. Since they're non mastervolume, they're always very loud and clean.

After playing vintage styled amps with modern features, I start to enjoy having the versatility.......that's what happened when I bought the Pro Tube Series Concert Reverb. The Bassman LTD has a slightly better overall clean tone, but the Concert was loaded with features, making it a funner amp to actually use.

On this Supersonic, in a band context, you'd want to approach it like a vintage amp by turning the volume high, and slowly bringing up the gains. Unlike a vintage amp, you can use it in your bedroom by running the gains higher and the master lower. If I were using this as a 'home amp' I'd rather have the Supersonic. If I were playing a blues festival, I'd rather have a cranked up Bassman LTD with good OD pedal.......but who knows, maybe the Supersonic head/2-12 combo would be better? I know I always liked my Concert Reverb, and it's basically the same exact amp.

As far as Fender gain, the Pro Tube Series amps have the best gain channels of any Fender. I absolutely hated the sound of Tonemasters, and the Prosonic was just OK. All I can say about the Tonemaster is that it was the worst amp I've ever heard Richie Sambora use........as soon as he went back to Marshall, his tone was good again.
