playing a tv show: Marshall TSL or Recto?

Hi guys,

I'm playing a tv show next week, and I've been told I have the choice of Mesa dual rec head and quad and a Marshall TSL100 and 1960 quad. Now, I'm familiar with the overdrive channels of these amps (I'd choose the marshall no questions at all), but I'm less knowledgeable about the clean tones they provide, and I'll basically only be using the clean channel.

I need to make up my mind fairly quickly so I can get back to the folk who set up the backline, so, anyone who knows about the cleans on these amps please post up.

-I've used 800/900 marshalls before and got reasonable clean tones, so what does the TSL compare like to those?

-The mesa has 6l6s and v30s, which is closer to my rig (vibrolux into v30s). This sounds like the better match. Any opinions, tricks for tweaking recto clean?

can't help much, but the recto's cleans are much much better than marshall cleans. IMO, of course.

Recto cleans > Marshall cleans. Period.

The Recto would be your best bet if you are mainly going to be running cleans without question. If you needed a distortion, I'd say Marshall... but you don't, so use the Mesa.

And good luck in that TV show! Where's it gunna be broadcasted? Is it a local thing or is this a Letterman-type gig? Whatever it is, sounds pretty damn important! Let me know if you can / want to.

personally, mesa cleans have never been my thing. however, i have no experience with the marshall....

I haven't tried the TSL but have owned a couple DSLs. I find it to be a very good clean channel although some find it pretty bright.
Mesa is Mesa which is just not my deal at all.

Well, it's a fairly big deal in my country. It's Sports cafe, a sports/comedy interview entertainment show, sort of our version of Australia's very successful 'footy show'. It airs primetime in NZ, and has a viewership of about 150,000 people. In a country of 4 million, that's fairly high numbers.

Not my type of show (wrong type of 'football'), but good exposure nonetheless. We'll play a full song at the end, a one minute intro at the start, and 15 second intros to the various guests they bring on. First show of a new series, so it's being heavily promoted.

I would seriously vote for the TSL cleans..... hands down.
I have owned both amps and the TSL cleans are far warmer and punchier that the rectos every would be.
Just make sure you wind the gain right up on the clean channel then slowly turn the clean volume up, it will never distort...... It has a mid switch on the clean, leave that off.

150,000 out of 400,000?! thats insane coverage!!! I'd go with the rectifier, recto cleans are great. GOOD LUCK MAN!!!
