Please help identify this

I've got a mystery box that I need help identifing.
The box has 3 Alpha pots, 1/4 input and output and operates on 2, 9 volt batteries.
The circuit board has a 14 pin chip NE565N. I've found the chip on the net but I don't
understand all the electronic lingo.
There is no on or off switch.
I think it might be a pre amp of some sorts.
There is no name or ID of any kind, on the bottom is stamped TAIWAN and all parts inside are Taiwan and Japanese.
Appears to be very old.
Any ideas?

No haven't fired it up yet, I discovered a hot wire from one of battery clips has come loose and I can't locate where it was attached.

Judging by the chip, it's a phase based effect of some sort.

A phase effect could be a posibility according to this. I found a disconnected hot wire from one of the battery clips that I've got to locate it's connection and re solder it before trying it.

The NE565N is a general purpose Phase Lock Loop (PLL) in a 14-Lead DIP type package containing a stable, highly linear voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) for low distortion FM demodulation, and a double balanced phase detector with good carrier suppression. The VCO frequency is set with an external resistor and capacitor, and a tuning range of 10:0 can be obtained with the same capacitor. The characteristics of the closed loop systembandwidth, response speed, capture and pull-in range may be adjusted over a wide range with an external resistor and capacitor. The loop may be broken between the VCO and the phase detector for insertion of a digital frequency divider to obtain frequency multiplication.

it could also be a pitch mod based effect...you really wont know unless you A) analyze the circuit or B) Plug it in

After repairing a few loose connections, I installed new batteries and connected the unit between the guitar and and amp and the mystery has been solved.
This device is a pitch shifting, harmonizer and octaver type of effect.
The tone is dark and may not be designed for a guitar.
It's like a Whammy pedal without the pedal.
Pretty much useless.
