Please help me decide on a wah for high gain purposes!

Ok so I have enough cash, but I keep getting overwhelmed by (boutique) wah reviews. I A/B'ed the Morley Bad Horsie 1 and 2, they were good but the amp I tried them with didn't really work with me so I didn't really get to know the high gain sound.

I was looking to score an Automagic SM2 off of eBay but it ran for more than I had expected. Basically I need a wah for high gain, for clean and overdrive as well but high gain is my main priority right now. I want to get that transparant but nasty George Lynch sound but want enough sweep to do Zakk Wylde stuff as well (just examples, not trying to copy anyone here). I tried the Jimi Hendrix and it wasn't worth a second try IMO. The Fulltone Clyde Deluxe, Budda Bud looked promising and perhaps the Morley Tremonti as I've heard some awesome stuff about that one as well. I'm open to suggestions so just fire away! Thanks

Spend the money on the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe, and you'll be done with the wah search for life. They cost a lot, but you get 3 different frequency ranges, and a rotary volume, so you can click the volume knob into a perfect setting, and even boost it past unison volume, if you use it more for solos.

The Teese and Budda wahs are also worth buying. Morleys are junk, IMO. Vox's still shave the highs off, and Dunlops are only worth getting if they're the highend models.

@taphappy: Thanks I considered that one, but I've heard some mixed reviews about that wah and I don't want to take any chances I might regret, perhaps I'll go test it in the store.

@Gearjoneser: Yeah I was kinda leaning towards the Budda (said to sound incredible with high gain, George Lynch sure does), or the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. I suppose I can afford the Fulltone, but I've heard it has some sort of "click" when you turn it on or off which may form a problem for me.

The Automagic is one of the best wahs out there. IMO the best boutique wahs are the Automagic, Fulltone Clyde Deluxe, Pro Analog Supaquack and Teese Wheels of Fire.

For the cash, go with a Clyde. The Supaquack can cut through higher gain and solos well, but it's expensive (like the Automagic). The Wheels of Fire doesn't cut as well as it should for higher gain.

the morley mark tremonti wah? high-gain is what it's designed for, whether its any good or not i dont know ;)

Yep. I haven't tried one either. If it's good enough for Mark, I would imagine it'd be good enough for most high gain players. It's certainly much more affordable than the other wahs I've mentioned.

i have great experience with my Dunlop Crybaby from hell(dimebag sig.). It cuts through about anything and with all stages of gain and is great for soloing.

I hated my CFH, but then again I was looking more for the Hendrix "Voodoo Chile" thing on crack (which the Supaquack does perfectly).

Take this from someone who knows wahs...The Fulltone Clyde(Hands down)is the best sounding,most vocal,and has the best sweep,of any wah I've tryed...I've tryed lots of wahs...The Clyde Standard is all you'll ever need if you want the early vintage wah tones...If I didn't mod my own wahs,I too would own a Fulltone Clyde...

Just an FYI...Dunlop has released a Zakk Wylde wah. I'm not sure how it sounds but my bet is it's a modified JH-1 wah.

Most of the Dunlop wahs are crap by comparison to Teese and Fulltone wahs..

That's a matter of opinion but if you know how to modify them, you can make them sound as good if not better. I have an old GCB-95 that I modded for true bypass, did the vocal mod, midrange mod, and even added a few caps to get it to JH-1 specs. Next up is a red fasel inductor and hot potz II.

I agree that the Teese and Fulltone sound great but I'm not about to shell out that kind of money for one.

no complaints with my CFH wah...although it's more than i need so i may try out the wylde wah for a simpler wah or i keep hearing that that silly looking ibanez wah has some good sounds and features so i may look into that.

Try to find a Fulltone inductor and pot...The red fasel and the Hot Potz aren't anything special by comparison....If you want the best sweep and the best wah tones you need the Fulltone parts...Been there,done that brother! :wink:

i can't hear anything wrong with the regular crybaby i own, but i assume thats just because i have never tried a boutique one.

That or NOS stuff like Mullard inductors ;)
