Please help me decide on a wah for high gain purposes!

Re: Please help me decide on a wah for high gain purposes!

I thought Mullard only did tubes?

I have a Teese McCoy Wizard Wah and man I love that thing, it's amazing. Got a very wide sweep and it's very vocal and designed for all levels of gain as well as being designed for humbuckers (though it works well for single coils too)

Had a dunlop crybaby and it's absolutely no comparison. I've heard John's work is amazing if you wanted a really good wah you could always pick up a Vox 847 and have John mod it for you.

Re: Please help me decide on a wah for high gain purposes!

Thanks everyone! I'd love to have John mod a wah for me, but I do live in Europe and I'd like to use it as soon as I can since I'm adding lots of stuff to my current rig this summer, maybe even next month (if everything goes well). I've heard the Fulltone Clyde handles vintage tones extremely well, but since my main amp is a Powerball (very high gain) it has to compliment not change the overall tone of my amp and guitar like heard on the Lynch records.

I'll probably be going to another music shop this week to see what I can get for my Mesa/Boogie if they have the CFH I'll be sure to try it :). Right now the Clyde Deluxe is getting the best positive response in this topic, but there's still lots that can happen.

Try to find a Fulltone inductor and pot...The red fasel and the Hot Potz aren't anything special by comparison....If you want the best sweep and the best wah tones you need the Fulltone parts...Been there, done that brother!

And yes...My opinions only of course! :smack:

That's just it. You can't get the inductor anymore as a replacement part. The pot you can though. However, I have heard many stories from folks who have used that pot and had problems with it (falling apart, construction quality). Plus, the Hot Potz II you can get for under $10.00 from BGMicro. They're both 100k Log pots so it really boils down to a matter of taste.

Edit: Even though they are both speced at 100k, they really aren't. The FT will measure out between 85-95k, HPI 95-100k and HPII 110-120k.

If I can find the FT inductor, I'd snag it to try it out in mine.

That's because there isn't one :laugh2:

The PA has NOS BC171B transistors, Mylar film caps and the original ERT pot (like the old Clyde McCoy wahs). The actual inductor was something special that Scotty took from an old electronic organ.

I've been using Fulltone pots since they've came out and I've never had a problem with any one of them....The Hot Potz lacks the correct sweep and taper of the Fulltone...I've tryed all of the current replacement pots, including the "Pro Pot" etc...Sometimes you need to crimp the little ears that hold the pot together tighter, but I've not had a problem with one failing, plus they're made to last alot longer....Every wah I own has the FT pot in place...I Like the FT pots over the 200k Teese pots...I don't care for the taper on those other pots..

I keep about 4 extra Fulltone pots and 1 FT inductor here at home for myself in case the pots are no longer available to us some day soon...Teese used to sell both and he stopped selling them...

I really only see myself doing wah mods on my own pedals now...The parts are expensive and I spend way too much time doing all the mods...I Like the Fulltone inductors and they are no longer available....There are are other inductors I could try,but I'm not really wanting to bother with it at this point..

I'm recommending the Fulltone Clyde wahs at this point....It's what I'd buy if I bought a wah tomorrow...This wah has in my opinion the best tone and sweep of the vintage style wahs..

The Regular Fulltone Clyde is a good choice, especially if you can get one used.
I had a Budda Bud Wah for years, and it sounds great if you open it up and move the pot so it takes off some of the highs, and extends the lower part of it's travel.

As for the Clyde Deluxe, it's in a class of it's own, mostly due to the Shaft, Jimi, and Whacked settings. For highgain, I really dig the Whacked setting, since it's voiced deeper and gives a great growl to lower notes. Also, the fulltones have a bright pink LED, so you can always see if it's on or not.

Lew let me borrow his....Way too pricey for any average player and it's best tones were the "Jimi" setting...The Std Clyde is the one to get and you just add the external volume control to it...

Re: Please help me decide on a wah for high gain purposes!

I had a Standard Clyde for a few weeks and I now own a Silvermachine MKI. I'll be honest, the Clyde was not too my likeing at all. I wasn't crazy about the voicing or the sweep range. The Silvermachine is AWESOME. It can cover a huge range of tones from classic to modern and is very vocal. It reminds me a bit of the wah that Vai used in Yankee Rose, but it can also get very Hendrixy. This is one of the most under-rated pedals out there for sure.

I've owned a RMC2, RMC3, Clyde Std, moded v847, Budda Bud and Morley Tremonti as well. This Silvermachine is my favorite, hands down.

Thanks AmpliFire, really cool of you to PM me and bump my topic up as well as help me out on the Harmony Central forum :)

That's really helpful info as well as you seem to have tried a lot of wahs and use high gain amps as well. Did you by the way try the Silvermachine with the Powerball you had a few months ago?

No problem brother. I never got to try the Silvermachine with my Powerball, but I'm sure it would sound killer.
