Hey everyone,

I am looking to buy a new guitar and it comes down to these two:

Schecter Guitar Research Sun Valley SS RF S
EVH Wolfgang Standard

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot !

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

What exactly do you like and not like about each?

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

The only real difference is the Schecter has the sustainiac(A pretty cool effect). Both
have the same nut size and similar Floyd rose whammys. I'm just wondering if the
sustaniac is worth the difference in price. The schecter is
$789 and the EVH is $599

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

I'd get the EVH, but that's just going off of what I've seen online. I'd say try them in person to see what you think about the minutia that cannot he expressed on paper.

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

There are more real differences:

Schecter neck bass side meets body at 19th fret, Wolfgang neck bass side meets body at 14th fret.

Schecter looks like a stratocaster, Wolfgang looks dumb and contrived.

Also, Schecter has 24 frets while Wolfgang has 22 frets. Nothing i personally care for, but a significant difference nonetheless.

You're not paying extra for the sustainiac alone.

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

The Schecter has a silly headstock and silly inlays and looks like a Charvel So-Cal copy. The EVH has a body that was designed to be well balanced to combat neck dive with controls intentionally in the path of your arm as it swings, making adjustments easy. It is also one of the few modern body designs that isn't either a bastardization or copy of older designs. Another thing to consider is that the neck pickup is hotter then the bridge on the EVH, which some people aren't used to. The neck pickup is wound as not to be too bass heavy, but it does have less treebles than a traditional neck pickup.

The Wolfgang bass side meets at the 16th fret, not the 14th.

I'd definitely try them in person before choosing.

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

They are both two perfectly functional guitars. So, based on your complete indifference to meaningful features (which really concerns me a bit), I suggest we select based on something important. What color is each one?

As for the sustaining, only you know if you play styles that would use it. Are they solid or see through?

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

How each guitar "looks" is a matter of opinion, and considering both are entry level guitars, I would suggest playing them (if you can) to see which feels and sounds better to you.

$800 buys a lot of guitar on the preowned market as well. Think about what features are most important to you.

How advanced of a player are you?

Do you need a floating bridge or have any experience with them?

What sort of music do you enjoy the most?

What amplifier will you be using and so on...

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

The Wolfgang bass side meets at the 16th fret, not the 14th.

You're right. Shame on me.

About the look, i think it has an aura of pointless differentiation. There are many things to improve about conventional guitar design (multiscale and neck and fretboard ergonomics to give examples), so fixing things that aren't broken seems lazy and arrogant to me. A bold yet unintrusive aesthetic (see Parker Fly) could perhaps have offset this impression, but i just see a slight, overstated deviation well within the comfort zone. Different strokes, i guess.

One last thing to consider is that it has quite a small body, most people don't realize this until they see or play one in person.

I just looked at the Schecter, but your choice of maple or rosewood board will also have an impact on the tone.

We need a lot more info to make a better recommendation. Otherwise you may as well toss a coin.

***Edit. Also, color. Everyone who plays knows that black guitars have more bass, red guitars are brighter and blue finishes are mello sounding.

too blue

Re: Please help me decide- which guitar to buy !

If you don't want the sustainer, how about a Charvel Pro Mod?

IIRC, they have a master volume and no-load tone pot, rather than the SVSS' two volumes, and I think more switching/ splitting options?

I have too many but this sure is tempting...ugly but tempting...
