Please recommend me some artists/records with great P-90 tone

Re: Please recommend me some artists/records with great P-90 tone

I remember reading that for the solo on Another Brick in the Wall pt.2, David Gilmour used a gold top with p-90s in it. Can anyone confirm that?

For a chance to hear what p90s sound like in the hands of players who use touch and sensetivity in their playing, and use a clean amp tone check out Grant Green and T-Bone Walker. I reckon as a reference you cant go past GG even tho there are some killer sounds out there from a lot of rock and blues guys.

Definitely true. Confirmed on numerous occasions by Gilmour himself. The guitar has a Bigsby too.

The uncharacteristic tone on the "Brick" solo was probably because the guitar was added late on in the recording/mixing process. I cannot remember whether it was DI'd through the mixer or through a different amp to the ones Gilmour normally used. (Recorded in L.A. whilst most of Gilmour's gear was in London.)

Interesting. For me, that solo is one of the top ten guitar solos in rock history. His tone and phrasing are perfect.

IIRC one of the guitarist in Loverboy used them as well

Um...this thread is about "great" P90 tones...:p

There are some GREAT examples here!!!

Leslie is a MASTER of the P-90 Jr...Iommi on early Sabbath...Townsend is also another big P-90 user.

Here are 2 of my fav players in the world pimping P-90's

Mike Campbell with his 68 Gold Top:

Here's a live Crows clip where Marc switches from the bucker loaded LP to a P-90 LP Pro...he switches about a minute or so in...

Re: Please recommend me some artists/records with great P-90 tone

Mountain Climbing is THE album and I love Leslie West. He has a unique tone/picking technique that is independent from the P-90/Les Paul Jr. tone. That is why I'm not sure he is as good an example as some of the others mentioned. At the same time, the P-90 tone is of the godz. Aerosmith Train Kept a Rolling (early live version) you can hear the plank getting spanked.

The Black Crowes are an example of everything good about music ever.

Re: Please recommend me some artists/records with great P-90 tone

A better question: Is there a BAD P90 tone?

I don't think so...

Not as far as I'm concerned. It's one of my favorites.
