Please school me in 5E3 amps/similar amps (discussion thread)

Re: Please school me in 5E3 amps/similar amps (discussion thread)

Yep, if you want breakup at low volumes a Tungsten Crema Wheat is NOT the way to go... I should know.... I have one :p 20w gets LOUD and even at "3" it can be surprisingly efficient.... heck it blows away my Vibrolux on "5" and that's supposed to be 40w.

Oh yeah ... I know of what I speak when I say I want < 10W!

Would love to hear clips of your Crema, dude.

Re: Please school me in 5E3 amps/similar amps (discussion thread)

That's the deal with the hopped up/upgraded 5E3 amps...cool amps but they loose that early breakup and grind of a true 5E3 amp.

Re: Please school me in 5E3 amps/similar amps (discussion thread)

5E3 clones . . . deff look into the Tungsten Cortez (5E3 clone), and the Tungsten Moziac (Champ clone)

YouTube these two amps and see what Greg V can make them souns like !

I WANT BOTH !!!

Exactly. When Lew mentioned about 5e3's being for the bedroom/home market he was right (unless you have a good sound guy who'll simply mic it up the right way and boost the levels to compete with the band). However, it's these modded 5e3 designs that cut it for gigging applications. With some NOS tubes and my telecaster, I don't get breakup until about 6-7 on the volume dial and that's perfect for sitting in the mix with a decently loud rock band. With the stock JJ's I get breakup starting around 3-4, but that's still loud enough to bother the neighbors (especially if you live in an apartment complex).

I'll make some clips of it for you once I feel better (I got a nasty case of the flu right now) :) For the classic rock and roll Americana sound I think it's perfect (which is why I bought it in the first place), but the volume thing is a consideration as it's not as linear as glowing reviews would like you to believe.

Thanks. And feel better!

I RARELY play my amps at home, unless I am using the iso cab ... I would say 95+% of the time I play guitar at home, it's either DI thru an amp or unplugged entirely. I save the amps for rehearsals, gigs, and recording.

Thanks :)

I do feel a bit better today so I figured I'd get around to recording a quick demo of a song I've been working on called "Won't Give Up On You". All Tungsten Crema Wheat and a Gibson ES-335 (since I seem to remember you being a humbucker guy).

Hope my amateurish playing doesn't turn you off....

Listened, and commented. I am now more psyched than ever to get this amp and do some 'sperimenting! :)

Re: Please school me in 5E3 amps/similar amps (discussion thread)

This totally is not a troll, but this is my experience with what it sounds like you want to do with your amp setup.

About a year ago, I thought the same thing you did - I'll get a smaller, low wattage tube amp and then I'll just get all my drive from that! I already had a Siverface Champ, but the 8" speaker wasn't really something you'd want to gig with. So I decided to go the next step up and get a 5E3. I built myself a clone from Mission Amps. The amp turned out excellent and the overdriven tone is all I wanted it to be. But... then came the real world limitations. My band was not impressed to hear how loud it was at rehearsal. I had to turn it down. Then I brought it to a gig. The soundman made me turn it down (way down). Finally, I ended up buying an attenuator (Weber MiniMass). It helped - A LOT. I was able to drive the amp but now I could actually control the volume. Still, I found the set up for stage use a bit messy. Finally, I got turned on to a pedal called the Lovepedal Les Lius. It does all sorts of cranked tweed amp tone - and it does them VERY well.

Now, I'm actually using my larger higher wattage amps (Vibrolux 40w, and Bassman LTD 50w) at gigs and using the pedal for driven tone. I'm getting much better tone because I can get the sound I want at pretty much whatever volume the situation requires. I haven't played through my 5E3 in quite some time now.

This is the one drawback to the approach of trying to tailor the wattage of the amp to the gig or situation you're playing - and especially since most of these Fender tweed clones are single volume knob amps (no master). You have ONE volume level. If you turn it down, you lose your crunch. If you need more volume, there's nowhere to go. I've still got my 5E3 and Champ, but they're mainly for home and studio use now. The little amps are excellent in the studio.

Just some food for thought dude. I've been down the road you're on, and found it not to be great in terms of being practical and applicable to different situations.

Re: Please school me in 5E3 amps/similar amps (discussion thread)

Thanks for your input, it's appreciated.

I have been gigging with the 2W Studio 2 for about 3 years now, and routinely augment it with a second amp. When I pushed the Swart STR-Tweed to break up and then slammed it with the Beano Boost ... It was loud, but not crazy loud; we're talking about 5W here. I have been using a Bumbox Cielo with power scaling as my second amp at gigs ... it's 30W and I estimate that I was running it about 20W when combining it with the Studio 2 running flat out. Once again, this was loud, but not crazy loud, doesn't drown out the rest of the band, and if anything, could probably have used a bit MORE volume. I do not play places that have reinforcement for the guitar. It sounds like this from the audience:

As you can see, it's not overpowering at all. Now, if I was running a 20, 30 or 40W NMV head and trying to get it to the same point, then I would agree with you; I would never reach that breakup point. But with 5W, it's definitely doable.

Check out Boothill Amps. He makes some killer clones.

Re: Please school me in 5E3 amps/similar amps (discussion thread)

If you want to save yourself a ton of cash and have an amp that will rival an actual vintage 5E3 in tone, look for a '60s Silvertone 1482. Even a minty example won't cost you more than about $500. Oh and you'll get a killer tremolo for free.

Seriously. One of the best 6V6-based amps ever made.

Re: Please school me in 5E3 amps/similar amps (discussion thread)

Thanks, that amp does sound sweet. I pulled the trigger on the Champster. :)
