Please tell me about your favourite transparent overdrive

Re: Please tell me about your favourite transparent overdrive

I like my Klon KTR.

Can be used as a clean boost or as an overdrive pedal.

Very versatile.

Previously, I was using a Klon clone...the AF1.

It was excellent but the Klon KTR is definitely better.

Better saturated overdrive if you want that and better transparent boost if you want that.

It's also a pedal you can leave "always on" and by reducing the volume control on your guitar, get to clean up for chords and rhythm.

Personally, I like it best with my Strat.

I don't really need it with my humbucker guitars.

Re: Please tell me about your favourite transparent overdrive

I have a King of Tone. I mainly use it as a boost, on the "clean" side, (the same way I use a TS-9 with the gain turned down and level up); but it sounds different; more open, less narrowing of the frequency band. I don't use the "overdrive" side as much, just sometimes when I need more crunch. It's a versatile pedal. Under higher gain settings it is looser sounding than a TS-9. It adds smoothness, volume and a little sustain without compressing too much, which I think is hard to do.

The KoT lives on my main board, which I gig with. At home I use the TS-9 on my smaller pedalboard in the same fashion. I felt like the TS-9's shortcomings are less noticeable on the smaller amp I have at home.

Keeley Katana. Clean boost with the knob in. Top boost with it pulled out. Clean or top, it's your guitar just louder. If you want, much louder, but still clean (unless you use the top boost).

I dig the Forza for transparent overdrive. I don't use a ton of transparent overdrive (I like what most ODs do to the mids and lows), but I dig the Forza.

I'd vote for the Archer. I've had it for about a month and it is almost always on. I was a little skeptical at first, not wanting to buy into the whole Klon thing, but it really seems to add just that little extra to my sound, regardless of which guitar I'm using. It stacks well with my Blue Note (Jrad), Earthquaker Talons (cool pedal I bought at the same time as the Archer) and SLOstortion.

The only pedal I use more is my Strymon Flint for the plate reverb.

Well, after doing some research and watching demo videos, although the ad copy bills the Forza as a transparent overdrive, in a video from June of this year, Blue & Alex were interviewed and said that it is the next step beyond the 805; so, definitely more of a TS style pedal.

Unfortunately, the two best-sounding demos were Chicago Music Exchange and Keith Merrow, and neither of them AB with the pedal off so I cannot tell how transparent it is, really. Also, the CME demo is using a guitar, pickup config, and amp I have NO IDEA what it's supposed to sound like so I have no idea what the OD is even adding, besides gain...

Re: Please tell me about your favourite transparent overdrive

I've had a Timmy for 3 months now and I'm still experimenting with it. It's great as a clean boost in the way Jeremy described. I've also used it with a bit of grit to moderate gain stacked with other pedals like an Open Road (this one isn't transparent but doesn't have the mid bump of a TS. It's got a very warm and amp-like character. I find it sounds best with the gain at or below 12 o'clock) or Son of Hyde when I wanted to add I bit more hair to their sounds. It pairs well with TS style pedals too.

I really like using as a boost so far. This or low gain dirt seems to be where the Timmy really shines. Put it before another gain pedal as a boost to push the pedal harder or if you just want more of the same sound pushing your amp harder, put it after.

As for the tone controls, every time I have it on my board I start with them all the way down (full frequency range), set my amp volume and tone to how I want it, then engage the Timmy and set its gain and volume. Then once I've achieved the desired overall volume and gain if the tone is too shrill on the high end or flubby on the bottom, I turn up the bass/treble cut until the high end is no longer shrill and the bass is nice and full but tight.

Re: Please tell me about your favourite transparent overdrive

In hindsight, the part in brackets behind the Open Road almost reads as if I'm referring to the Timmy...the Open Road is the one that is not transparent, but it affects the tone very well.

The Timmy on the other hand is as transparent as you can get.

Not transparent overdrives... but wanted to make two points about "clean and character boosts":

That is as good of a clip of the archer as I have at the moment. I start with nothing but amp drive, then turn on the Archer, then the EXH Crayon, then back to just the Archer, and finally just the amp. It's not much, but it should give you an idea of how transparent it is on an amp that's set to break up a bit.

Ah, excellent clip, thanks! The Crayon adds a noticeable colouration compared to the Archer.

Re: Please tell me about your favourite transparent overdrive

Brother Ben, check out this vid from Mick and Daniel. I came across it last night. Alot of folks know Mick from Guitarist, but Daniel is such a deep-well knowledgeable tech and a genius with pedal systems and pedals in general.
They concluded exactly what I would have expected (or at least what my own experiences have been like). Klon circuits just aren't transparent or clean they have a strong mid hump but that is really why we like em. Timmy is about the most transparent drive for natural transparency. But what I dig most is both Daniel and Mick are unbiased gear heads with good ears for tone! For myself, this is good stuff to sit and watch when you just want to run scales. Cheers, RG
