Please tell me of a strat neck single coil that can do jazz

Re: Please tell me of a strat neck single coil that can do jazz

lol Them's fightin' words!I will see your Wes Montgomery and raise you a Charlie Christian.

You know who else didn't use humbuckers? Grant Green. He didn't have the same sort of profile as Wes or Kenny but he was Blue Note's guy (and that's no small thing).

John Pizzarelli and most of the New York style guitar players didn't use humbuckers either. Manuel Galban played some great Latin Jazz out of his telecaster, he's one of my all time favorites.
Check out what he does with this old Doris Day tune.

Is the SSL-5 any similar to that or is it really in a different league?

I'd say the SSL-5 is much hotter with a lot more mids, almost a P90 sort of thing.

yeh man, I'm with you on that one. Grant Green has one of my all time favourite sounds. His albums "green street" and "idle moments" are just so beautiful. His playing is laid back, delicate and expressive.
+1 on Manuel Galban. Ive got that record. I love his version of "patricia". There is a you tube video of Guthrie Trapp (the nashville ace) playing that on his tele too. really cool.
Re: John Pizzarelli...Oh man, his dad, the seven string legend Bucky Pizzarelli has one of the coolest rhythm styles and sounds, his rhythms and chord subs are just so understated and hip. If you get the chance to grab a record he did with Frank Vignola called "Moonglow" it is all top shelf.
Here is the title track Frank is on the selmer and bucky is playing 4 to the bar on his archtop. They swap at around the 2 2/2 minute mark and bucky keeps it in the pocket with a chord solo.

again...apologies to the op for the derail, but gawd....there are so many gorgeous and inspiring guitar sounds out the, it seems a shame not to share. Keen to hear how you get on with the strat.

I'll say that last clip of the kid with the tobacco strat…pretty ok. And Stevie was decent.

Still, they all sound like a guy playing jazz on a strat to me.

Can you? Sure. Would I? No….although my go to Jazzers these days are a P90 neck Les Paul, and a Jazz neck 335….

None of it gave me tone boner though.
