1mm dunlop tortex

Re: Plectrum choices?

i ONLY use the dunlop Tortex green .88mm plectrum ..

I seriously have issues with every other piece of plectrum i try

Tortoise-colored Fender Heavy--the big triangular ones. Bought a gross several years ago and doubt I'll ever run out.

BTW, the tone is completely different if you foolishly use the white ones.

Re: Plectrum choices?

my cousin tried to convince to use evh 0.6 mm picks and it felt like i was using a pieces of card to pick with
overall i like super stiff or thick picks considering the gauge and tuning i use

yea.. i heard that those thin picks are counter-productive to being able to pick fast

reason i like the .88mm ones. they are stiff but with just a tad of give..they just feel right + the coating/texture is easier to grip for me

the super thick ones just dont glide over the strings like i like

Re: Plectrum choices?

Carbon jazz3 max-grips 95% of the time. (thrash/death/black-metal)

The other 5% is .5mm dunlop(red) tortex for any strumming-style clean stuff, even if I'm mostly picking out single notes from the chords. If there's much strum at all I just can't make do with the jazz3.
Maybe if I'd devote more to relaxed strumming it would be different,,,,,,,,but what death-head in their warped mind really has the time for that kind of stuff anyways. lol

Re: Plectrum choices?

Mostly PrimeTone Jazz III. I like the carbon ones as well and still have a bunch of the red nylon and Eric Johnson versions. Also have the John Petrucci version, but not yet a fan.

Re: Plectrum choices?

I've been on a pick quest for over 30 years now. For the past few years, I've mainly used Chicken Picks with PrimeTone small triangles seeing spot duty.

Re: Plectrum choices?

I use different ones as needed for styles and sounds. While I am mostly a finger guy I do use Tortex .88, Gravity 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 once in a while.

longcat and I like .73mm Ultex for essentially the same reason. It's nice and stiff, but doesn't have the typical heavy pick 'click'.

Re: Plectrum choices?

For electric, I always go for the Ultex Jazz III 2.0 or the Tortex 1.14 Jazz III's. For acoustic, it's always .60's Tortex TIII which are larger picks that are great for strumming, but also have the Jazz III pointed tip so I can pick out the single string stuff a bit better. For bass, I like to use my fingers most of the time, but I also use a Tortex .88 Sharp if I need to use a pick. I like precision in my picks, even if I'm too hamfisted to notice it.

Re: Plectrum choices?

Regular Dunlop Tortex in either 1.00 mm or 1.14 mm. I keep half of the picks normal, and sand down the other half so the apex is really pointy, and the pick kind of looks like an ice cream cone triangular shape. I would like to have some thinner picks on hand too - sometimes they alter the tone for just what the song calls for, especially on certain lead runs where a lighter touch would be beneficial. There's no real one way of doing it.

Adamas 2mm Graphite. After I got accustomed to it, I can't use anything else. I understand why Jerry Garcia raved about them. He introduced the pick to Carlos Santana among others. Only available direct from Jim Dunlop.

Re: Plectrum choices?

Dunlop small teardrop 1 mm, be all end all IMO. Would love if anyone would manufacture one with extra grip surface, but until they do, this is my weapon of choice. I use it for everything, and normal sized picks (hell, even Jazz IIIs) all feel huge and clunky now.

You should check these out.

Re: Plectrum choices?

I use Planet Waves Black Ice, 1.1mm. Totex feel in a Jazz III shape. Dunlop makes a version, too. I switched from regular-shaped Totex/Gator Grip/Ultex after 30 years of that shap. I have to say, I play better now.

Re: Plectrum choices?

i choose picks based on style, tuning and gauge i'm going for,
dragon's hearts pure for very heavy strings and black metal and for clean stuff due to the warm sound of the plectrum
however the carbon jazz iii is my go to for black/thrash but not good for cleans IMO
and 1.5mm gravity and 1mm tortex for strumming and light gauges
