Plectrum choices?

Re: Plectrum choices?

For 20+ years, I used Tortex 1.35mm sharp point, then a couple of years back, I rebuilt my lead playing from scratch and found they were too large for what I was learning to do (better). After trying many makes, sizes, I ended up at the Jazz III XLs - regular Jazz III size didn't work for strumming, though we're great for lead runs.

Re: Plectrum choices?

I thought we were talking about picks for the bass. My bad.

Re: Plectrum choices?

Yeah, this is in the basement....

Dunlop Tortex 1.14 for Bass
Dunlop Tortex 0.88 & 0.74 for Electric
Dunlop Tortex 0.74 & 0.60 for Acoustic

Fender tortoise mediums thrown in every so often for good measure.

Re: Plectrum choices?

longcat and I like .73mm Ultex for essentially the same reason. It's nice and stiff, but doesn't have the typical heavy pick 'click'.

The above refers to bass since this thread is in the bassment; we both like the large triangle shape. For guitar longcat likes .88mm Tortex triangles, while I like regular .73mm Tortex teardrops. The one exception is that I prefer 1.14mm Tortex when playing through my Marshall Jubilee.

i've played jp jazz iii and they were my go to for a while, then i switched over to carbon max grip jazz iii

Re: Plectrum choices?

Mostly use an Ultex .73mm on bass. Another good one, surprisingly, I absolutely hated on guitar: Dunlop "Big Stubby" 1.0mm.

Re: Plectrum choices?

Anything in extra heavy ala Gary Moore. Currently using the clear yellow Dunlop's I saw Gary use in one of his videos (Tribute to Phil Lynott or the Montreux Concert performances).

Re: Plectrum choices?

For bass, I use an old Dunlop that is quite thick with rounded edges, something like the one in this picture. I use it because the round edge sounds like a finger pluck but being a pick is consistent in attack (as opposed to my bare hands which are not so skilled on bass).

Same here, I like a pick that's thin, with enough give for strummifng, but still stiff enough for single note picking. I used .71mm Gator Grips for years, but they wear out really fast and leave pink dust all over my guitar.

Edit: Forgot this was The Bassment, for bass usually use Dulop Gator or Tortex 1mm or 1.14mm whatever I have on hand in my random pick baggie

My go-to bass pick for years has been the Dunlop JazzTone 207. It sounds smoother than any other I've tried. It also makes a dandy mandolin pick, and will tame a bright guitar quite nicely. The 205 is nice for the same material in a jazz iii shape.

For guitar, I like these versions of the jazz iii best at the moment.

I always been a Fender Medium kinda guy. Then a few years back I visited this cool little shop that carried Charvel Guitar and dude handed me one of these.http://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...e=&network=g&gclid=CL6sh8S24c4CFQRehgodL5EEuw.
The Herco Picks are awesome. Not to grippy but has some to it where it's amazingly comfortable. Where have these been all my life?
I also like the Fender Nylon, http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/098-6351-800. They have a wonder feel to them. I really like them almost as much as the Herco's.

Re: Plectrum choices?

For many years I have been using Jazz III's, but I recently switched to Dunlop Tortex .88's (green). I forgot how much I liked the Tortex for playing chords and it sounds a little brighter overall. Not to mention they don't get lost nearly as easily...

Try the Tortex Jazz III's. They were my go to for a while before I decided that the Ultex Jazz III 2.0mm was just better for my needs.
