Plexi simulator OD pedals

Thinking about getting one of these pedals after they all impressed me in the YouTube videos, but I don't have any first had experience with any of them, which have you used and which did you like/dislike?
Mainly been looking at

Carl Martin plexitone
Lovepedal purple plexi
Tech 21 hot rod plexi
Wampler plexi drive

Any others I should check out?

my main amp is a Marshall jmc2000 DSL 100. I know it's not a plexi but are these pedals made to make different amps sound more like marshalls? or would I still benefit maybe even more so by using them with a Marshall?

Re: Plexi simulator OD pedals

there's the zvex box of rock (or double rock), and personally I think the marvel drive sounds the best.

Tho in all honesty, since you have a DSL, I wouldn't buy a dirt pedal. Just leave the gain a bit low on one channel, would that be sufficient?

Re: Plexi simulator OD pedals

Add this too

Re: Plexi simulator OD pedals

Wait... what about a plexi are you after that you hope to find in a pedal that you cant find in a DSL?

But to add another to list of cool plexis in a box try this one. A friend of mine has it and i really dig the way it responds, it feels more like an amp than most pedals do.

Re: Plexi simulator OD pedals

That does sound great! Cheers guys, you've just made my decision harder lol
The main reasons I want one is A) they sound great, B) I could use it as an extra lower gain "vintage flavour" channel with my amp, and C) if I ever used a non-Marshall amp in a gig (as I sometimes do) this would get me in the same ballpark that I am used to.

Ah ok I see... then for the first keep in mind that a nice boost might also do that. For the second you can add the old Marshall Bluesbreaker or one of the clones to the list the analogman prince of tone is a killer version of it.

Re: Plexi simulator OD pedals

Carl Martin has a couple you should check out. I have their big Plexi-Tone; just saw that they've introduced a small box LOW-GAIN version that got my attention.

Don't forget the other Tech 21 pedals: British, Leeds, Oxford. Radial has their tube driven pedals. I've heard about a pedal called the Hellbender that reportedly NAILS Malcolm's crunch tones.

Hahaha....

Still haven't made up my mind... In fact I added the OCD to the list to try even though it's not strictly a Plexi voiced circuit.

The OCD is a GREAT pedal. It was my favorite "boost" pedal by far (dumped my modded TS9 after the OCD showed-up). But it's NOT a "plexi in a box". My favorite screaming plexi in a box is the Carl Martin Plexitone. I've owned two of them. I use mine into my Ceriatone JTM45 (which I run clean) to get the screaming crunch and lead tones that I want. You can use it into the clean channel of your DSL for some great, low-high gain tones.

The OCD would work AWESOME running into the green channel of your DSL, set in crunch mode. I had a sweet DSL50 a couple of years ago that I used to run that way with the OCD in front and it sounded HUGE... like a JCM800 2203. In fact, I picked-up a 2203X after that and ran the OCD into the front end of that, and it pretty much sounded identical to the DSL50 ran that way. But the OCD was great for tightening-up the drive and adding roar and dynamics. It wasn't a comparable OD pedal (to the Plexitone or other great pedals) for getting the entire amount of distortion from a clean tone. Just doesn't have a big enough tone for that to my ears.

And you can also add the DLS by catalinbread to the list. I like the sound of the clone I made of this pedal :bigthumb:

Re: Plexi simulator OD pedals

Cheers guys! Some great pedals suggested here by the sounds of the YouTube demos! I wish I could try them all!

But I guess for now the choice has been made for me. last night I searched for most of them on eBay and the only used one I found in the UK was the rothwell hellbender (thanks boogie bill) with no bids and only 24 hours to go. so I thought what the hell and placed the opening bid at £60 and I WON the auction! That's less than HALF the new price! Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It's not stricky advertised as a "plexi in a box" so to speak but going by the YouTube clips, it sounds like it'll do exactly what I want it to. Still really intrigued by a lot of the mentioned pedals but hopefully this will work out for now at least.

Very nice! I was a click away from buying a Hellbender several times a couple of years ago. Videos always sound great. I'll be curious as to how you like it once you've had time to play with it.

Another pedal that I had always been interested in for plexi tones was the Wampler Pinnacle, based on the videos I'd seen of them. I finally picked-up a Deluxe version last summer and pretty much couldn't stand it from the moment I plugged it in. Just didn't have the punch of my Plexitone. Sounded mushy in comparison.

That's the idea of that pedal, sag and extra presence to simulate the EVH tone. Not a general purpose plexi replacement, but I think it's very cool for the tone it does provide.

I totally get you. For the tones I expect from it, it does deliver. However, it has so much sag that I'm worried my sound will just drop in and out live. Mine's the old, higher-gain version, BTW.

Hard to tell without a live band demonstration. I know a lot of guys who are great players who like that sag, and it works for them. I'm an old school rock guy, but for me I like tight, immediate response. That preference goes all the way to my choice of pick (Dunlop Jazz III XL) as well. I like 'em stiff and sharp so there's no slop or lag in there when I play. So it's just a personal preference for me. I had a buddy (great player, great tone) who couldn't stand my VHT Pitbull Ultralead. He said that it was too dry and tight for him. But I dug it (despite not being a metal player).
