Plexiglas amp sheilds

Re: Plexiglas amp sheilds

I covered half of my 4x12 with one at a couple of gigs, and it really does make it more bearable to play loudly.

I may make one from materials from Home Depot. However, still a bit pricey for the stuff - just want to be sure it's worth the time/money.

You want to lower your stage volume by putting things in front of the speakers to dissipate the volume?

Why not just use less speakers?

Bigger cabs tend to get a very satisfying low-end resonance that's hard to live without and even harder to replicate if you're the kind of player that likes it and needs it.

I've actually been thinking about getting one of these shields myself, as i play my halfstack pretty loud.

yup, they work pretty well for cutting down the kill zone in front of a loud amp.

there is a venue i play regularly that thinks im always too loud so they keep a shield in the closet for whenever i show up. its only a dr on 4 so i think they are being a little overzealous. the idiot sound guy also likes to put tons of delay on my solos

I built one years ago. Used a 48" X 48" sheet of 1/4" plexi. On each side of it is a 1" hardwood dowel, fasted to the plexiglass with aluminum angled brackets (like angle-iron). At the base of the two dowels are "feet" made of pieces of "1X"3 about six inches long. I painted all of the wood pieces flat black.

This "shield" works great at deflecting the in-your-face volume of guitar cabs. But I would caution that placement is key. Gotta keep the shield at least 2 feet or more away from the cab or you get this weird tubby thing going-on with those sound waves bouncing back on each other. I rarely use it anymore. Actually... I keep it in the doorway to my man cave to keep the cats out (so they don't use my cabs as scratching posts), but so I can leave the door open.

Like many neat ideas, the practical usage isn't as "be-all-end-all" as you'd think....

I hear that... I had beam blockers for 5 minutes... I hated how they looked more than any improvement it gave.
