Pod Amps?

Can anyone fill me in on this?

I recently ran across a web site with pics/story about an amp builder who
built guitar amps that were specifically made to house PodXT/POD modelers.
The top of the amps had a compartment built into them so that the POD unit
could be placed in the cabinet, and the controls/window were still accessible.

If I'm remembering this correctly, the guy had stopped production but was
planning on starting the company up again. Anyone know what I'm talking
about? I can't find the web site...

Re: Pod Amps?

No problem. My mind has a special place for useless knowledge like that. FWIW, I just went the modeler -> rack power amp -> cabs route.

Re: Pod Amps?

be VERY careful with those Atomic amps.

the first generation of atomic amps were known to "set pods on fire", literally melting them. The first gen was subsequently pulled from shelves for this reason.

There is a second generation of atomic amps that were just released, a 112 50, and a 212 50 I think. Since they are so new it's too soon to tell if they have fixed the issue. I'm sure they have gone to great lengths to solve the problem, but it's still something to be concerned about.

There are alternatives to those that work equally as well.

Tech 21 makes an amp called the Power Engine 60. They have all the features of the Atomics, sans the tubes, they're all solid state, but they are completely transparent like the atomics. It doesn't have a built in housing for the POD or whatever other modeler you're using, but they work just as well, and IMO better.

Re: Pod Amps?

even without the built in housing you could easily use the metal pod stand and slide in under the amp handle. seems like the pod would be in a way better position to see and mess with.

Re: Pod Amps?

There has never been one story I've ever heard about any Atomic amp causing the POD to catch fire. I'd be real interested to hear any details of any such situation. Personally that's probably some rumor or hear-say some one has passed about.

It's also a qidely accepted fact that anyone who has tried the PE60, Hot Rod Deluxe or Behringer amp in comparison to the Atomic knows first hand the Atomic wins out in every respect.

I've been using and working with Atomic since day one of their production. I have 2 18w 112's, and on the new stuff 2 50w 112's and a 212-50w. If anything they supply a better voltage regulation over the wall wart to the POD.

Re: Pod Amps?

Never heard of the fire thing myself either.

I had one of the original ones, and replaced it with an 80's Roland keyboard amp that was more portable and cost half as much. It was a great amp, but it didn't give me enough for my money. The Roland delivers very faithful reproductions of the Pod's patches, and has awesome frequency range.

Re: Pod Amps?

yeah, it's not a thing i have seen myself unfortunately, I'm sure it would have been funny if it wasn't my POD. But anyway. I'm in my local shop every week and they used to carry the original 18w 112s, but when I was looking to buy one they all got recalled. I asked and thats the answer I was given as to why. So like I said not a first hand thing, but it's impossible to get the first gen one anywhere except used on ebay now, not even online retailers carry them. Anywho, I'm sure the newer ones don't have issues, and are louder, which is a plus.

There were never recalled. Your shop was giving you nonsense. And you can still get the original 18w version dreict from Atomic. They still have some stock. Actually all sales are direct through them. They are offering a holiday spceial on the remaining 18w ones right now. Might be like $399??? http://www.atomicamps.com

Aden if you wanna hear the 50 watters in action, I'll be playing down in Long Beach during NAMM. I see yrou in OC. See my Myspace page for date and details.

well what an unfortunate rumor; I'm sorry for perpetuating it.
