POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

I'm playing Easter too, nothing too exciting though, get to go a little crunchy on Happy Day, the rest of it is clean stuff. We have a choir though, might be interesting, first time working with a choir.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

I'd go with my home bedroom rig: guitar - cord - dod250 - delay - small Genius PC speakers (1")...sounds pretty good really.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

HATE these threads...hahah!

I play in a smaller church too...i'm lucky here though...they usually tell me to turn it up! :cool2:

I don't think i could do what you're gonna do...i have some horrible experiences in those situations...but it sounds like you're gonna try your best to make it work! That's good man!

One last thing...REMEMBER MY SIG...it's the 11th commandment!!!

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

I'm at the point now where I have to forget equipment and scramble to learn the songs.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

If you still have the ToneLab, use it.

It can sound good. Try EQing it weird / differently.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

One serious problem was my inability to hear myself. I mean, I know my way around the fretboard fairly well, but I have to hear what I'm playing!

The ToneLab sounds OK at home when I run it into the effects return on my amp. I suspect a possible source of the terrible live sound may be in the balance of the ST's send control and the PA Mixer's gain and fader settings.

I think I may have developed my presets though the headphones late at night while everyone was asleep at home. This time I will see if the soundman (boy) can give me about thirty minutes before rehearsal Saturday.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

Sounds like a plan.

I play through a POD X3L.

However:
1. At the main campus we have individual digital monitoring stations.
2. At the other campus I use a Hartke B30 bass amp as a monitor (low volume).
3. In my band I have a JBL EON 15 monitor in front of me with a dedicated mix.

You could use open headphones or earbuds with one out. It IS doable.

Loud stage volume usually is not me.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

East Amplification Studio 2.

2w studio head designed by the guy that did Budda amps. Has a built in internal load so you can run it straight into a p.a. system. Your tone will be great if you can have stage volume or not.

Check them out.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

Go with the POD. The audience won't be able to tell the difference and you'll still sound good. These are the kind of shows for which they were made.

That's exactly what I'm going to do. I finally dialed in a decent clean tone last night. All I need to do now is set up the same tone with phaser on the channel just below it, and a similar tone with fuzz one channel above it. I will use outboard delay and tuner.

good luck...just show up as early as you can and get your sound going where you want it!

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

When I played in church, I was constantly appalled at the lack of interest in/time dedicated to/ignorance of sounding good. You can't just show up, plug in (no matter how expensive your modeller and/or how much time you spent on your presets).

In addition to private practice to learn the songs and group rehearsals to set the arrangements and tighten the performance, a band has to have technical rehearsal time to work out problems in the setup, set a mix, and estalish some rules on engagement to adjust things on the fly. The soundman needs to be present. Hand signals should be prearranged in case a particular instrument of voice is too loud or soft (or just plain inaudible.)

Since time is short, I'll go along with your present setup with the Tonelab; just make sure you get enough time beforehand to get the sound right IN THE CHURCH, WITH THE BAND.

I played in a small church, but people were cool, and my little Marshall clone (13 watts) with a MiniMASS worked. I actually got a good enough tone that the other guitar player ditched his POD boord and bought some pedals and a Blues Junior. (Score one for the good guys. lol) I firmly believe that stage amps can work, even in the smallest room, but it takes planning, cooperation, discipline, and practice.

On the other hand, sometimes (in your case, now) it a fight that's not worth fighting, and I'm not one to say that all modellers suck. They are a feasible solution (even if I do prefer real amps). If you, like me have a bunch of pedals you love and know well, I would look for a simple way to m model an amp, and run the rest of your rig as close to the "normal" way (with a real amp) as possible. If I went back to playing in church today, was asked to do it without an amp, I'd use my regular pedalboard and a SansAmp character pedal (as somebody suggested previously). That way, it's all laid out like always, and tweakable on the fly.

But for next week's service, stick with whatcha got.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

If you are doing a church gig and you are worried mostly about your tone, I think you are missing the point.

And while I have not used a Pod, millions have and they seem to work just fine.

.

I respectfully disagree...

First of all...i know that isn't his primary concern...but it is a concern nonetheless.

You want to do your best...and while i know that's usually the case regardless of venue, i take what i do as serious as a heart attack...and it is with that burden that i prepare and practice and plan.

I take tremendous care to shape the sound/tone/mix of our whole band and singers. I try to achieve that in the most pleasing and most conducive way possible. All in order to facillitate the right enviroment for people to sing and think about only what they are supposed to be thinking about.

That also includes the band itself. I want them to like what they are hearing and how they are hearing it, so they are free to enjoy it, and live in the moment with it. I have found (through the years) that when this happens, the congregation is free to do so as well, and in a much easier and more inviting way.

Not to mention the quote from Jeremy in your signature, which has never been more fitting.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

Here in Atlanta the new thing, from small to mega-churches, is to play a Pod HD series... All the guys share patches so there's no real worry with dialing in if someone's done it before you. It's pretty great sounding... I don't have one yet, but plan on getting the 500 in the next couple of months, you can't beat the portability. I really like the ability to run stereo amps as well.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

I understand that the PODs are good and were already good before the HD series was released. I played with a guy (a SDUGF member) who got great tones with an X3, but it's like Rich said, I have all these pedals that I have painstakingly selected. They sound good and I am very familiar with dancing on them.

> Aceman,
I am concerned with tone now so it won't be a distraction to me or anyone else when it is time for more important matters. As for learning the material, I will.

Re: POD vs Amp - Need help with decision

More of my <$0.02...

It doesn't matter how much better a POD would sound than your Tonelab, if you can't hear it... I've heard great things about the Tonelabs, so I would work on the other issues first.
