I liked the look of the X3 but I couldn't really justify the price for what I need it for tbh.
As a test I got a backing track for 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' (it was the 1st song in the list
) off the web and gave it a go. With minimal tweaking I got a sound I was relatively happy with, so that to me shows that with more time put in I should be able to get something useable for when I can't be bothered to drag an amp out and mic it up 
I was about to suggest such a buy.
I have an X3Live and it's basically the same thing but i can do two amps at once. Whilst i'm sure two amps at once is cool, the unit is so tweakable that i have never actually used the two amps at once feature and so i might aswell own an XT (in fact, i used to before i traded it for my X3).
As you've found, they can be found for low prices these days... and i reckon they sound decide enough to lay some ideas down.
