Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

I wouldn't call a Thunderbird pointy.

Pointy but not horrible is an oxymoron.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Yeah sorry. I like Fenders, Gibsons, and Gretsch's mainly. Can't help.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Rhoads bass will be neck heavy, as will the Kelly bass.

If you want a pointy head more than a pointy body, the Ellefson RIP CBX V is veeeeeery close to the old Jackson Concert V 5-string bass from the 90s. Though if you can find one of those, even better.

Then there's the Charvel 2B and 3B.

Can't speak for the Ironbird, but Geezer had one for a while, and if it's good enough for Geezer, it's good enough for whatever you got going on.

+1 on the Charvel 2B/3B

The stock electronics aren't great (we're on a pickup forum, right?), but the rest of the bass is solid.

ellefson also played the ironbird on the early 80's, so that's 2 great bassists backing the ironbird, and the rhoads bass being neck heavy will on my opinion depend on the wood combo, let's say the body is something like mahogany or maple (if i remember correctly steve harris has a maple body p-bass) i doubt ti really being that neck heavy, also the placing of the strap pins play a big factor on neck dive

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

I'm not nearly as picky with Basses as I am with guitars. The only bass I did not like at all was an Ibanez SR300–my dad had one and a bandmate had one as well. Both of them sounded wonky and I didn't care for the necks.

My favorite bass is an early USA Spector (technically mine but currently in my father's possession, which is 9/10s of the law lol)–great feeling neck and loaded with EMGs that really sound awesome. Second favorite bass is a Thunderbird followed by a Fender PJ bass.

Why does pointy automatically equal bad?

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

'Cuz (usually) ergonomics go straight out the window (not that they're not hanging out on the ledge with pointy guitars, but hey...)

The Rhoads bass body is disproportionate to the length of the neck, same with the Kelly bass. The P-bass body is proportionate to the length of the neck, being as much larger in size to the Strat body as the neck is longer than a Strat neck. However, the problem with the Strat/P-bass body is that it is designed to hang parallel to the floor, and not tilted upwards in classical position to facilitate easier fretting. It's easier to compensate for this by relocating the front strap pin under the horn rather than straight into it. On a Rhoads or Kelly bass, the strap pin would need to be on the neck at about the 9th fret.

This is, of course, if you were wanting to counteract the design flaws, and not merely treat the symptoms with a grippy strap.

I would absolutely love to have an early NS-2 with the Hazlab preamp. longcat's #1 is a Euro from about 2000 when they were still using the EMG BT preamp, and tone-wise it's about 90% of what the Haz offers. Of course the Haz preamp is a $500 upgrade, so we make do with good enough

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Aesthetically I just find pointy basses (and guitars) to be really annoying, like they're saying "LOOK AT ME." I prefer the classic looks of Fender, Gibson, and Gretsch.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

I think I like pointy guitars in part because some other people find them annoying. In particular I like the warlock shaped body and of course Gene's axe bass.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

You've got a point (no pun intended).

Pointy guitars invariably point me away from music I would invariably find pointedly annoying.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Exactly. Because that's the sort of music that is supposed to piss you off at the least, and maybe even cause physical pain at the best.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

I think the closest I come to liking and really wanting a pointy is a BC Rich Mockingbird... or the aforementioned Iceman. Even then, it'd have to sound reallllly good for me to pull the trigger on it.
