Pole Piece Height Adjustment - Help!!

Hi

Ive purchased a 2nd hand pair of Humbuckers and the pole pieces werent at the correct height

What I need to know is, whats the best height to start adjusting them from?

If I lower the pole pieces until the screwhead (where the screwdriver fits) is level with the top of the pickup (so the slot is flush with the top) and adjust from there is this the best way?

Also how do I know when they are high enough is it when it sounds too bright?

The last thing is, can I damage the pole pieces by raising or lowering them?

You can level the screwheads even with the top of the pickup and then raise them so that they match the radius of your fingerboard. Try to keep the screwheads so that the slot is not lining up with the strings. (something like \ /\/\/\/ ). Keep adjusting until it sounds good to your ears. And no, you can not damage the pole pieces by raising or lowering them unless you break off a screwhead (to the best of my knowledge).

If i set them in a V formation, wouldnt some pole pieces be higher than the other

Also last thing, I usually have a really bassy Low E-String, how would i set the pole piece to make it more trebly

The V formation is just an example. If you aliegn the screwheads so that the slot of the screw is not parralle with the string, you get a better magnetic field from the pup.

If you have the pickups in a direct mount guitar, adjusting the screws will help, if you have them in a mounting ring or pickguard, raising or lowering the pickup would be the way to go (no more than a quarter turn per adjustment that way you can re adjust if you over shoot). Trust your ears and you'll be fine.
