Polishing/Buffing Frets

Anyone know something comparable to Dunlop 65 cloth that I can grab at a hardware store? Don't want to use 0004 steel wool...would rather go with a cloth.
Thanks folks!

Re: Polishing/Buffing Frets

IMO, assorted hard backed micromesh pads are the way to go. The various grits available allow you to get deeper nicks and abrasions out than polishing alone will do, no goop to clean up, and since it's hard backed, you can glide over the tops of the frets without touching the board. 12000 grit micromesh will give frets a very nice luster.

Re: Polishing/Buffing Frets

I use a felt block from Rockler woodworking store and some automotive buffing compound. I just rub the felt block on the rubbing compound stick to get a little on there and then buff the frets. They come out nice and smooth and remove any tarnish and light indentations. I have found buffing them is usually enough to avoid recrowning.

Yeah turtle wax polishing compound works but steel wool and blue masking tape is the easiest and fastest way to polish frets .

Re: Polishing/Buffing Frets

I use flexible polishing papers from stewmac. They're rated up to 8000 grit or 1 micron, but I think it's a slightly different rating system compared to your normal average sandpaper.

In any case, it ends up being a super high gloss mirror shine. Not even exagerating, it turns the frets into mirrors if you go up all the grits.

Great stuff.
