Which is most useful to you? Which pedals give you the most GAS? Which effect could you not live without?

I was thinking about this while I reassemble my tone in the UK, and I realised that I could live without all my other modulation pedals, but the one sound I really needed to keep on my board was the Phaser, I really love the sound they create.

Phaser for me too.

But the *right* chorus is a thing of beauty. Problem is most of them suck, or people use them as a crutch.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

the first effect pedal I ever bought was a MXR Phase 90
for the exact same reason you describe

when I could have only one, the phase was the one

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

I can like some mild chorus occasionally. I like the phasers, but used sparingly. Same with tremolo, but slightly more applicable/versatile. So my nod goes to the trems.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

For me it's the tremolo, which can do a decent imitation of the leslie/uni-vibe sound too. I prefer a slow foot on the wah pedal to the phaser even though they aren't really the same thing at all. If I could have just one though it would be the tremolo.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

Uh...is this for brief uses to create a certain sound, or for always-on useage?

I guess I am going to have to go with my first love also. The first effect I bought was a MXR Micro Flanger. If I had to go with one effect it would be my MOOG MF-108M

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

I really like Phase Shifters and UniVibes (also a phase shifter) but my favorite would be modulated delay (which I believe is chorus). A Deluxe Memory Man can add some awesome depth to your tone, clean or dirty.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

Phaser, I thought I was the odd one out liking it better to a Chorus. It's been ages since I used either one. But if I have to go and by one I would go with a Phaser. My fisrt phaser had single rate control knob with a switch called colour that changed the the tone a bit. I loved that phaser . Wish I still had it, it was simple and good. THE MXR Phaser reminds me a lot of it.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

I like phasers a lot, but would have to give honourable mention to a subtle vibrato pedal.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

I like trems a lot. I have the tremulus lune pedal on my to build list.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

Chorus light and slow to add subtle depth to clean tones. Loath the swishing sound of a phaser and a Flanger is too dramatic.
Really picky about what chorus I use and my favorite is the cheap Rocktron Deep Blue.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

On that list. Tremolo for sure. I've owned the others and I always switch stuff around, but that's what I'm sticking with right now.

Re: Poll: Best Modulation Effect

Overall, if I could have ONLY one modulation forever - a good deep flexible chorus would get me by.

That said - there is definitely something to the under stated swoosh of a low setting Phaser,
The range and kerang and jet wash factor of a good Flanger,
The vibe of a Vibe (not on your list by the way), [Edit: oops, just saw it there!]
And the throbbing pulsing sex of a good Trem....

I think Tremolo is the hardest to use well, but the best sound when done right. But again - there is a time and place for every modulation. I love them all.

I love a good univibe, my sound has been pretty incomplete ever since I sold my Micro Vibe.
