Poplar Bodys

Does anyone have anything to say about poplar guitar bodies? Advantages/Disadvantages? I'm thinking about getting a Jackson DKMG with a poplar body, just wondering what you guys think of the wood.

Re: Poplar Bodys

To tell you the truth I used to not mind them but after playing with an Alder Strat for so long the Poplar Strat sounds a little too thin in the mids by comparison. It still sounds good, I just have to crank up the mids a little more to get it in that zone. I think that lends itself well to metal tones though... sounds great with some hot pickups (like a hot rails) in it.

IMO poplar is not a "bad" wood per se. Ugly? Yeah it is... shouldn't be used for trans finishes but it's an acceptable wood for guitars. For a while James Burtons specifically requested a line of his signature Teles be poplar-built and the Steve Morse model EBMM guitar is made of poplar.

I guess it comes down to personal taste.

poplar is an okay wood. in some guitars it sounds really good. I do like the sound of a poplar strat, i had one for a long time, now i have an alder one and i find the tones very similar. I feel they are not as bright and focused as ash. and b2d is right poplar is an ugly wood, full of grey streaks.
