Popped a high E string

Re: Popped a high E string

Just to clarify, I do not corrode/rust them either, but I do get alot of black residue...guess the reaction between the strings and my skin oils.

I do notch the crap out of wounds, and sometimes plains. Thats why strings like Dean Markley and GHS last much longer for me than softer alloys like EB, Dad, and any pure nickels.

Re: Popped a high E string

The boiling gives some sparkle back to the wound strings, for a while.

I don't do it anymore for guitar strings since they are $3 for a new pack but I'll probably revisit the concept for bass strings. The problem there being that bass strings are more sensitive to come out of alignment when messing with them.

Re: Popped a high E string

I only break strings when I'm gigging hard for hours, going through frequent changing temperatures (A/C in the car to outdoor summer festival in the heat, back to the shade, etc.) and/or bending a lot on the strings. I keep my hands clean before playing and I've never experienced the corrosion/sweat thing others mentioned. Some strings seem to get dirty over time anyway and if it's negatively affecting the sound I need, I'll change them. Sometimes the partly dead/dirty strings just hits the spot for a particular kind of music. It depends.
