So i'm looking into getting a new amp if I can get approved for a card through musicians friend. The one I am looking into is Marshall MG100HCFX 100W Head with MG412CF 4x12 Cab. Would you guys recommend it? I mainly play hard rock/metal.

Re: possible new amp

I would not buy this new, rather i would save the money and use it for used cheap peavey 100W head. If you are working with low cash, definitely look on used stuff, you just cannot go wrong with used tube head, you can get something like :

200 bucks, will sound much better than the tiny marshall head

Same for the cab, buy a used one, no need to get a new one in fact, you can get some really cheap cabs these days for almost nothing and they will sound very good.

Do not buy new.

Re: possible new amp

Buying a new speaker cab is beyond crazy. Pawn shops are stuffed to the gills with good 4x12. I wouldn't buy an amp new either, really.

Agreed. The MG cabs are MDF instead of plywood. You can find some Peavey 4x12 cabs with greenbacks pretty cheap used as well as Marshalls. Just remember, Marshall cabs come with all sorts of different speakers which sound wildly different.

Me, I'm kinda crazy... I wanna get a Splawn 2x12 with vintage Marshall cosmetics and put a couple Creamback M65s in it. Of course that requires that I rob a bank first.

My cab looks like it's been in a garbage truck. It's an old Marshall... I have no idea how old or what speakers it came with. I bought the speakers from a production company I used to mix for, and the owner told me to take that old cab along so I'd have something to put them in. He was just trying to clean out his shop a little.

Edited to add: Don't get too hung up on the cosmetics of a cab. Unless you're putting it in a flight case it's gonna get beat to hell on the road.

I'm still mad that I missed out on the Black Friday deal that Jet City did. $100 unloaded 4x12s. They make good cabs. I would've gotten one and loaded it with some WGS speakers and had a nice, solid, cheap cab.

Old and or/cheap is the best way to go with cabs. Take it out on the road it's gonna look like ass inside of a year.

Hey, OP, if you're near Jersey, Rutherford Music Exchange in Rutherford has a Peavey 5150 cab with stock Sheffield 1200s for $150. It's beat looking but it's solid. I've been eyeballing it but I'd have to sell a kid to afford any more gear. LOL

Re: possible new amp

Keep in mind, that how it looks like is not what is important, i have seen marshall 4x12 beaten to ****, that cab was barely existing, but the sound!! huge !

you want something that sounds good, not that looks good.

Re: possible new amp

My main issue is I love in Charleston WV. The only music stores here are overpriced and rarely sell used gear. There is a couple pawn shops but they do not do a lot in the musical department.

Go to ebay or reverb.com

If you need to hear it yourself, than you have to travel i guess. But honestly, you can use youtube in most cases to hear how this sounds and get idea.

Just buy it on reverb (hate ebay for that 10%) and be done with it.

And I live in the ass-crack of Minnesota. I seriously have to drive 90 minutes to find a music store or pawn shop worth going to. If you don't wanna pay outrageous prices it is what it is. The internet is a godsend, but shipping on something as big as a cab is usually prohibitive.

correct on that shipping, but sometimes on internet you find a price that is so low, that you can even pay for the shipping and still have very good deal.

I got Jackson KE2 off of ebay for 1100 and that guitar was new condition, not a scratch no fret use nothing, like when you buy it from the factory.
New is 2500..

WORST-EVER amp + WORST EVER cab.

You could probably find the whole rig used for $150ish..,and that is still faaaar too much

Loading your own cabs is still kinda expensive

You can get some killer 4x12s for $150-300 used if you shop around. With pretty much your choice of Celestions.

Re: possible new amp

dude no, just no.

you can find a marshall dsl, peavey 6505, blackstar ht40 or 50, jet city, carvin.legacy, hell even some mesas (stiletto got mine for 500, or some DC, nomads, etc) all used for less than what you would pay for that rig new.
let alone the resale of all those will stay what ypu paid, so you can make your money back unlike the amp your looking at.

those suggested will suit your needs financially and musically more than what ypur looking at.

Re: possible new amp

No, no and no.

You can get many amps by Jet City, Peavey, Blackstar and Laney in the used market that will kill any, any MG series Marshall.
Check out these:

Jet City JCA50H
Blackstar HT40 head
Peavey XXL
Laney Ironheart, either the IRT60 or the IRT120.

Any of the forementioned will destroy a Marshall MG so badly it's not even worthy of a comparison, for almost the same price if you get a good deal.

Re: possible new amp

There are certainly way better deals than the Marshall MG half stack.

If you want to stick with Marshalls, go on Reverb.com and find yourself a nice used DSL40.

Otherwise, any of the amps that Diego mentioned are killer amps for killer prices especially in the used market. If you're gonna use a MF card check their prices for those amps.

Re: possible new amp

Go used. I paid the same price you are looking to pay for my JCM 2000 with a 900 cab.
