Gotta say I'd go older Ibanez; especially if you can get a Made In Japan Model. You can pick up a complete MIJ RG on eBay or Reverb at a decent price or prowl your local used gear shops and pawn shops as well as CL and FB Gear sites. You'll get more for your money and the MIJ Ibbys with the Edge or Edge Pro are top notch guitars - other than maybe replacing the stock pickups (IMHO) and a proper set up you won't need to do anything else.

Working on a couple of Ibby projects right now (pic below) and, all parts included, I've got $500 in the RG550M/570M Mutt (1st year of production 1987 Maple Neck and 3rd pickup added to the cost) and less than $300.00 in the RG520QSTB with the DiMarzio Air Norton F/Tone Zone F upgrade - feel like I stole it from Music Go Round at $179.99 as all it needed was cleaning up.

A good investment? Heck no. If you have to sell, people will grind the sale price down to $300, give or take.
It's a stepping stone guitar for non-serious musicians.
Gibson, Fender, PRS, Suhr, Jackson, Charvel Martin, Taylor, etc
Save your money for good stuff

This is generally good advice, but I think Joe forgets what it was like to be young and poor and needing/wanting even slightly better gear.

If everyone waited for the best gear, there would be a lot of people not playing.

And honestly, these days, most of that stuff is way over-rated. It is certainly over-priced.

I basically agree with you, but the guitar he's looking at is $850. My local Music Go Round stores have a bunch of USA Fenders and Gibsons for less than that. Add $100 and get a PRS Mira. If he was talking about something for $300 and GJ said, "Save up for a Les Paul!" that wouldn't make any sense.
