Possible work around?

Called Seymour Duncan customer service to see what was involved in ordering a covered pickup with zebra bobbins in case I wanted to remove the cover. Was told that humbuckers, when being built, come with either black or zebra's. Had to hope you got lucky to get what you wanted with the standard production. I was told that it would be an extra $70 to get the zebra and that the order would have to go through the custom shop. Couldn't they go and grab one that they know is zebra colored off the production line and ship it out? I don't have a clue how things are managed at the shop but an additional $70 is kind of steep for a pickup that's not being custom wound.

I would say decide which color you want more before you make the purchase. Also I am by no means a representative sample size, but most of the SD pickups I've removed the covers from have had black underneath

yeah, all the pups have been black under a cover, other than antiquitys. those have been a mix of zebra, reverse zebra, and black. i agree, buy the pup color you want and add a cover if you want to.

I'd just buy a cover, or use it as an opportunity to order an actual Custom Shop pickup (something you design from the ground up).
