Possibly looking for a new amp... suggestions?

Re: Possibly looking for a new amp... suggestions?

You might wanna take a closer, more in depth look at the 5150's !

Very under rated amp !!!

I like the 5150's for solo and heavy rhythm stuff and they record very well, but overall I have trouble getting the mid-gain textural stuff I like out of them.

I currently own a Dual Rec Multi Watt and I get what you're saying. I've looked around for awhile and I'm getting ready to buy a 5150 III in the near future. It pretty much solved all of those "buts" that I have about my Mesa.

I'd recommend checking out the EVH 5150 III.

I haven't really spent time with the 5150 III's, I'll check 'em out.

If you like Friedman's stuff, he collaborated a bit with Dan Boul @ 65 Amps on the new Whiskey. Minimalist controls with a good effects loop.

Never heard of that particular model. I'll look into it!

I can't say enough great things about my BE 100.

Nice... an acquaintance in a local band owns one, I'm trying to arrange a time to go demo it. The BE and the Suhr are the top contenders still. I'm leaning towards the BE100.

I'm really digging my Blackstar HT100.. Haven't noticed them mentioned yet, so might check them out?

Carvin Nomad/Bel Air? They're in the Vintage line. I'd like to say I had personal experience with them. 2 channels, Fendery clean and Marshally crunch. A lot of people say the dirty side sounds congested and get it modded to really open it up. Really thick reverb, lots of effects loop happiness. It's 4x EL84-powered so there's a lot of tube warmth going on. Apparently you can pull two for less power too.

Seriosly dude..people are throwing around MkIv's and Dual Rectos, Pitbull UL's , Splawn Quickrods, Friedman Be100's, and you come up with a Carvin Nomad?

I have never been a big fan of the Rectos, they just don't fit my all-around needs. I think they work very well for metal and drop-tuned riffs, but they're not the amp I immediately think of when I think of Blues.
Bill

A Mark amp isnt' exactly the first thing that comes to my my when I think Blues amp either.

lol K.

- 2 channels, maybe with some modes or options switches but nothing too fancy. A simple layout overall. (mmhmm)
- Really good, yet simple effects loops. (mmhmm)
- Plays well with pedals. (mmhmm)
- Bridges a hard rock/old school metal category but can still be versatile enough for classic rock and blues and the like. (mmhmm)
- Not very stiff... very touch-reactive and a bit compressed but not dry. (mmhmm)
- Tight, deep, fat lows, clear, crisp mids and smooth but defined highs. (eeehhhhh with mods)

He wasn't looking for hi gain for what I answered, and I assumed he'd want pedals to get there anyway. I didn't think he needed a Soldano with a set of fake ****.

I mean, unless one of those amps puts out like a Kardashian.

Drive up to Tone Merchants and you can demo all the Friedman amps, and talk to the man himself if you have questions. Dave is an awesome amp guy, and will go out of his way to make you happy.

That's the plan, actually. I'll probably go there in the next few weeks. Plus I wanna check out this 50W head they have now.

I remember playing a PRS amp several years ago and not liking it at all. Maybe it was a lemon but the clean tone was very bland and the distortion channel was muddy as hell. Bad tubes maybe? I don't know but I shut it off and didn't look back. Maybe this is an improvement. I think there's one local shop that might have PRS amps.

I agree the roll out of the 1st PRS amp line were lifeless, but the amp mentioned was just released is the Archon, which I had a chance to play yesterday and when this tour is over i'm getting one (and I have a Komet, and a Engl with me now) There's just something about that amp that just fits, feels great, sounds amazing and just does the right thing not matter how you set if for any genre. My 2 cents anyway. VG
