Post #4000 - NPD! FoxRox! Thanks to TGWIF & Olin

I didn't really plan this with the post count, but realized yesterday that it could work out that way so why not?! Over the last few years here I've made at least a handful of new friends, reconnected with some old ones, learned much about guitar gear, playing & so many other things... hopefully ya'll have picked something up from my rambles as well.

But at this moment I've gotta give extra props to TGWIF and Olin for hooking me up with this totally nondescript but really special bit of stompbox goodness;

So what IS it?

Why its a FoxRox fuzz pedal!!! And not just any fuzz either... its (if I understand this correctly) basically a prototype of the Hot Silicon box, which is an NPN with BC109C's that was built to be fairly close to the fuzz in the Captain Coconut for a certain ex-Megadeth guitarist, whom I won't name out of respect. The guy scrubbed all the lettering off this box because he didn't want anyone to know what he was using!

The tale is that a few weeks back I called up TGWIF to yak about fuzz pedals... having played a handful and knowing that he's the fuzz king I wanted to narrow it down, buy one pedal and be happy. After some talk about various boxes I said that I really loved the fuzz in the long discontinued Captain Coconut and ideally, would love THAT in a standalone.

Turns out that he knew the whereabouts of the above box, which belonged to Olin, who got it from the ex-Megadeth shredder. A couple three phone calls & a few emails later and I connected with Olin, who's a seriously cool cat and sealed the deal for this box which arrived just about 48 hours ago.

How's it sound?!

F'in great!!! Or at least that's what I've gotten in the hour or so I've had with it!

What I loved about the Coconut fuzz, which is a FuzzFoot (?) and more or less based on a fuzzface was how controllable it was over other fuzz boxes. Compared to some others which are like an instrument unto itself this one can indeed generate that sound where the amp is about to explode, but it also responds beautifully to picking/hand dynamics and cleans up AMAZINGLY well when the guitar volume is rolled around, even when stacked on a grinding amp or with other dirt boxes.

Control, dynamics... and lots of versatility thanks to the middle knob which is the "grit" control. The grit is a transistor bias, turn it full clockwise and it gets spitty and saggy, the dead battery tone. Turn it the other way it gets fuller and louder. It also works as an EQ of sorts, controls size and note clarity... plus it should also eliminate the achilles heel of all fuzz faces, temperature sensitivity. I haven't messed around with the internal trimmer yet.

Color me thrilled! Now I just need more time to play with the thing!

The whole thing just goes to show... you never know who's really behind these screen names and who they might know!

Thanks guys!

cool pedal. fuzz boxes don't work for me though. nice cable you got there, the Dimarzio one. is the other one a Tourtek cable?

So...

Was it Chris Poland's, Jeff Young's, or Marty Friedman's? :D

It's a ehhh... cable cable!

No idea man. Likely a ProCo or something, have a bunch of them. If I don't make cables myself I stick to USA made stuff with quality wire, like Beldon or Mogami. I also have some Spectraflex cables and like those a lot. Never had one fail, unlike Monsters... which I only have because they gave them to me.

Thurisaz - It belonged to one of those three guys... heh heh heh

I'm not gonna tell. Maybe TGWIF or Olin will spill it...

...I'm planning on getting some Monster Rock cables because they are thick as hell and replaceable.

Cool story! :)

The CC2 is a great pedal, and I love all three effects in there. Between his Fuzz and AM's Sunface it's fuzz perfection! :D

The only cables, besides really cheap molded end cables that I've ever had fail, and fail repeatedly are Monsters. Not once, but twice I've had the plug pull out of the jack and get stuck in the guitar. Once at a gig. I have one that picks up radio stations... I can't even be bothered to take it to GC & replace it.

I really like Spectraflex cables... can't kill 'em & they sound really good.

It's a good thing Monster cables are replaceable...you'll need that!

I hate Monster cables...worst cables I ever bought!
