post-92 Stingray 5 string pickup question

Hey guys,

So I have a Stingray 5-string from around 95 or 96. When I bought it used, it had (and still has) a Bartolini pickup (the 5-string type, without tabs) and a Bartolini preamp (the NTMB 918F I think). I really cannot get a sound to my liking out of this pickup, and I want to switch to a SD pickup. I THINK I want the alnico SMB-4a, but looking at the specs, it seems I have to get the three-coil version (since my bass is post-92), and that doesn't work with the STC preamp, which I also want to get. Is this right? Or can I use the two-coil version with my bass? I have the three position blade switch, if that helps.

So basically I am confused. Two-coil or three-coil? Or just screw it and get the 4d ceramic? Help, anyone?

Thanks,

Phil

I think I'm starting to get it, actually. The three coil is a direct replacement for the stock MM pickup, but the other two work if you're switching out all the electronics, which is what I'm looking to do. Right then!

welcome to the forum!!

does your bass have a three coil pup? if you are swapping out the etronics as well you can pretty much do as you please.
ive built a few basses with the alnico duncan mm pup and etroncs and its a great setup.
