Post NAMM aftershock

Re: Post NAMM aftershock

But, I understand why they have their own stores. I don't follow Harley and don't have a clue about their business practices, but I'd assume that every store has their new models, a ton of 'lifestyle' stuff, and every salesperson aggressively pushes product. No more Guitar Center or mom & pops to deal with (that's what they want, right?). I could see it heading that way.

Re: Post NAMM aftershock

Don't say Harley.... Right now they are going down the tubes.

yep -but the undeniable parallel is there -Harley tried like Starbucks and Gibson, etc etc and so many other companies that take on a corporate structure to move beyond their primary market, history and expertise in order to grow verticals and often things that can't even be considered verticals -just their name slapped on something -ultimately it debases the core customer and loyalty and devalues the brand. Starbucks had to close 1000 stores and remove the food odor to get their coffee business profitable again.

I'll use Mike Pedulla as an example of responsible and noble guitar/bass company -Mike hand built basses and guitars since the 70s and expanded slowly adding help and eventually having some things built for him overseas -maintaining his reputation all the way until some of the product outsourced didn't meet his standards, so he shrunk the company back to within his total manufacturing control to avoid ever not being able to be proud to put his name on it.

-Today he's down to building a few hundred instruments a year again (probably in his garage) and still making the living he desires and never compromising -he didn't need to own the world, he didn't need to own the bass market, he didn't need to do more than what was responsible for maintaining the highest standards. Hell, I beg him and his wife to build me another guitar about once every year..... but that's not his thing any more (hasn't done a guitar run since about 1980) so he politely declines every year.

We need more companies like that -smaller operations serving the public and the mom and pop shops, and less guitar factories trying to swallow up every other company until we are left with 3 choices.

Couldn’t agree more.
The corporate environment in this country is shameful.
When is enough, enough?
Well, never for these corporate pigs.

Re: Post NAMM aftershock

we are in the post R&R era...that means that all the big gear businesses are going to continue to decline...they are dinosaurs and know it...when Fender CEO says uke players are a big part of the future ya gotta face it...the people like Mike Pedulla are going to do partly because they are doing it for the right reason and partly because the people playing for the right reason recognize it and will go on supporting them....the BS $5k Gibson and Fender eye candy equipment will be the first over the edge...and that is a good thing....

It sounds like Mike is a true capitalist.

Re: Post NAMM aftershock

The ESP booth was really insane this year. Some of the best displayed guitars of any company.

There IS one thing about Harley that always baffled me:

Wtf are there some Ford trucks with Harley badges slapped onto em??? I thought that was braindead modders at first, but NOPE, they came from the factory that way

Anybody remember the Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer? Or the L.L. Bean GMC Denali?

I had an Expedition with Bauer interior for a while, and couldn't for the life of me understand wth it had to do with a cheap brand of sweatpants... but I guess they're like supposed to be a "designer" or something? Lol

But yeah... I ditched that interior for a new leather kit. And then got a Navigator, no lifestyle branding needed.

Re: Post NAMM aftershock

^ The way I read the Harley situation was that they were moving their 'overseas sales' to an overseas manufacturing point so the insane tariff situation doesn't hurt their sales there.....sort of like a version of Fender Japan.
I thought all the USA bikes will remain made in USA.

Re: Post NAMM aftershock

I'm pretty sure that a lot of those companies that were part of the failed lifestyle approach were lost in the bankruptcy/set free/divested, bought, whatever.

Re: Post NAMM aftershock

I just can't do any of this ready made lifestyle crap -anytime I see somebody wearing head to toe full compliment of Harley Davidson gear--I giggle in a sympathetic way.

I have a similar feeling with the tough guy MMA gear and people who wear jeans with the pre-made holes in them -pretending to be poor or working class for a fashion statement.

I once saw a big Ford f250 truck done in Gibson guitar badging -like an Eddie Bauer or HD edition -but Gibson -with finished chrome and all -I guess it was custom.

I think if Gibson could afford a tie-in with a major US truck company, they would hop on it.

For certain, this was maybe 15 years ago and had to be a one off custom for a guy trying to get laid -but to this Nashvillians credit -it all looked legit -with the chrome shaped into detailed Gibson logos on the banding, a guitar hood ornament that was shaped flat against the hood, Oval Ford logos were replaced with Gibson etc and such

-except for the the back tinted window sticker with a big silver Gibson logo -a bit much.

I have a photo -but this was like 2003 and I had a flip phone that took like 640x200 CGA photos -so you cant really appreciate it's glory going 80 mph on I-24.

I think the major difference between Gibson and HD is that Gibson appeals to only guitar players....very few people possess the skill and tenacity to be a musician much less afford a top tier guitar like a Gibson.
But just about ANYONE can ride a Harley.
So HD as a lifestyle brand is a winner, whereas Gibson is not and likely never will be.

Your probably right, but then again -look at all these kids wearing Ramones, Misfit Skull, CBGBs and Thrasher shirts -Poseurs are everywhere. A ready made image or feeling from a purchase is an easy sell to most any one feeling low self esteem.

They feed on that.

Hey, if Marshall hadn't been making a beer fridge forever -I'd be more making fun of this...

To be fair Marshall's empire is very concentrated by today's standards.
