Post your easy ways to relic a guitar

Why pay through the nose for a relic'd finish guitar these days, or a real vintage one, when you can just make it yourself.

Say you have a MIA Strat or something... throw it into the wall a few times. Bang. Instant relic finish.

Let's see some more crazy ideas, eh? You can never have too many crazy ideas, I say. Then the doctor always comes in and gives me more sedatives.:jester:

The newer poly finishes do not relic like the old nitro ones do.

Very true. Thick poly finishes tend to either look new or just plain damaged; they don't ever really look worn. The closest thing to an exception i cna think of is the thin, matte poly on the Fender Highway 1 series. Those can be worn down in ways that sort of resemble nitro. Sort of. I imagine, though I've never specifically seen it done, that something similar might be true of the Faded series from Gibson.

Faux-used finishes don't really appeal to me, though. I suppose there's something cool about an old beat up guitar, but I prefer to keep my instruments looking as new and as nice as I can for as long as I can. Some wear always happens, but despite other people saying things like "it's got mojo, man.." I get pissed off when the finishes on my guitars get blemished.

There's also a big dent in the back of my Strat from throwing it, look closely at the body pic, there's one or two other finish chips gone.

I saw somebody in a magazine with a burnt guitar, and thought it looked cool. Awhile later, I was drinking with my brother, and decided to make my own burnt guitar. I took everything off the body, poured gas on it, and lit it up. I put it out before it was completely destroyed, but I have yet to reassemble it.

I started griping about it not looking like the one in the magazine, so my brother looks at the pic and goes, "He did that with a blowtorch, dumbass." So, I went out to the shed, got out my blowtorch and went to work on another

True story : An Old buddy of mine took the body of his MIM strat and put zippo fuel on the bottom. Then, suspending it with metal wire, he set it on fire for about 30 secs of so. The guitar looks like is was burned from under ( wich is was), and it ended up looking good. Don't know if you can count it as a relic, but it does look like it has gone thru a house fire. I'll try to post pics later.
