a 1985 Gibson SG special.. made between 1983 -1988....

I call it a studio special as the specs are literally identical to the 1978 studio but the serial number points to 1985.. to my knowledge.. these are the only 2 SG models with a 2 volume/1 tone configuration..so IMO.. its a somewhat uncommon model originally i wanted to get her refinished but have since decided when i do have the spare cash.. to get the neck reset and a fret job... replace all the hardware to black...perhaps a pickguard to cover up the bad spot..

loaded with late 80's EMG H and 85 and atm is tuned to C..rarely played though.. mainly because she is in desperate need of a fret job.. relatively low action but the frets are pretty tiny.. almost like a fretless wonder..lol

one question .... WTF type of finish is this?.. ebony or natural..? take into account its age and the original color has faded or even changed over time

Re: Post you Gibson SG

Is it gold-tinted or is that just some odd camera reflection?

Quick cellphone snap of mine, maybe I'll upgrade the pic later

04 special
reprofiled neck
ebony fretboard
hipshot tuners
experimenting with pickups

finish is not original nor are knobs... Was thinking of switching to speed knobs since I'm doing more clean stuff with volume swells nowadays

well i was going by official colors and the only 2 it could be is natural or ebony .i guess.. nothing to compare the color to though.. might be the camera reflection, but its most likely is that age has had an effect on the color

Gibson SG Diablo 2008 Guitar of the Month. By coincidence, I bought it on the day Ronnie James Dio passed away. I named it Dio, since his Sabbath era music was recorded with an SG and Dio letters are in Diablo.

As a matter of fact, I even went to the Dio Memorial in Burbank a week later. I absolutely love this guitar and it's one of my main players.

My 2007 SG Standard, currently loaded with Phat Cats. They're not doing it for me, but I LOVE P-90s in an SG, so I'm going to try P-Rails next.

Re: Post you Gibson SG

Threads like this are bittersweet to me.

Flashback to September 1982 with me.

One afternoon as I walked through downtown Jacksonville, Fl. I came upon a pawn shop. Went inside and saw a 1967 SG Jr as above. I know nothing about jack at that point in my young guitar loving life but I know for $150 it is a deal I'm not letting by, case too. I layed it away and payed it off in a month.

Right away I had the P90 ripped out and installed a Cream colored Bill Lawrence 500XL(Joe Perry influence) plus electronics and have Grovers put on it with a Leo Quan Wraparound bridge. Yes I hear all the vintage lovers out there, and don't I wish I had left it alone, but that was my first "real" guitar and it was a BAD DAWG!!! after that change over.

Few months later, Spring of '83, after getting three other really nice guitars I had friends visit from up North and one wished to borrow it. I allowed that to happen. Needless to say I never saw that one again. Itwas stolen from his apartment in Milwaukee the Fall of 1983. When he told me this he also told me he had put a Floyd on it and painted it White by then. :argh:

Hell yes. These vintage juniors are screamers. What year is yours?

I think it is a 1965. Bought it for next to nothing because of a partial crack at the top of the neck and OMFG the pickguard has an edge missing. I like it.

That's a sad story - I lent my old Gibson SG to a friend to go for an audition as he didn't feel comfortable using his Strat. Be careful I said the latch on the case isn't very secure, OK he says and heads out the door. He didn't get more than a dozen steps before the case opened and the SG fell out and damaged a the side of the body by the control panel. This was 40 years ago and I still get mad! I had to glue a small section back on... I'll add a photo of my old SG Special later, I bought it used in 1968 and it was already reliced then!

I have 2 SG pickguards sitting around if you need one. One is the regular black and other is a mirror finish that I bought recently for my Epi SG but decided to keep the original black pickguard instead.IMG_6359.JPG

Re: Post you Gibson SG

Re: Post you Gibson SG

There's no charge! I was going to put them both up on the Good Karma thread... the black came from there some months ago - the mirror finish is plain mirror finish - looks very flash! I have a chrome plate on my Gibson SG Special so I thought I'd try something similar on the Epi but I just went with the original black one. If you want either of them or both, just let me know - No Charge!
