Post your Gibson SG

My Gibson SG Raw Power... 100% maple, '57 pickups. It's pretty nice, if only it didn't have that chunky 50s neck :(

edit: also, my phone cam is dreadful. It doesn't look bad in person.

Re: Post you Gibson SG

Here is my old SG - I bought it used and battered in 1968, lots of dents scrapes and the cherry red paint flaking off... then I had it re-sprayed in 1970 and added a TOM bridge and later TP6 tailpiece. When the neck was broken around 1975 it was repaired and an ebony fingerboard added...

It's not a Gibson, but probably my favorite SG. Rock-N-Roll Relics SixtyOne model with a David Allen Cool CAt P90.

I don't regret sanding my neck down and refinishing in tru oil. Coming from jacksons it felt like a log to me. At your own peril of course...

Re: Post you Gibson SG

I think it is a 1965. Bought it for next to nothing because of a partial crack at the top of the neck and OMFG the pickguard has an edge missing. I like it.

A family friend used to have a '61 - LP logo etc. Though it had been Grovered and Nashvilled, had a neck crack down at the heel, still cool. A resto would've made it truly killer.

I know what you mean, after switching to Jackson and Charvel I found it impossible to go back... but I don't want to mess around with it, not least because I'd also like it narrower... after putting Black Winters into my old Epi G-400 that has become my main guitar and I absolutely love its neck, if I'm not mistaken that's the 60s neck. Luckily, a friend of mine really likes the Gibson and will probably buy it, so no need to mess around.

I need to get a zebra set of '59s to put in mine (an '09 Faded) - I had a mismatched pair (one zebra, one black) in and it sounded great. Either that, or put in the P-Rail set I bought for that purpose

Re: Post you Gibson SG

2001 SG, bought as a 'project body'. Had the electronics, back cover and the TRC (and the body of course).

It has a repaired neck break at the body join. But not only that, it had been semi stripped (originally cherry red), burnt in spots, attacked/stabbed with screwdrivers and names/tags scratched into the back wood and generally abused.
I stripped all the remaining paint with acetone and a light orbital sanding. No grainfill used, and a brown/amber stain + tinted clearcoat makes it look like an aged cherry somewhat. All the marks are still there of course as well as the burnt spots.

Guitar is really a good one.....much better than the '99 which got sold off once this arrived (and once the '01 proved what a dog the '99 was). Its had a few pickups in it, but the 72 T-tops are what will stay.

Re: Post you Gibson SG

I almost bought a black '50s tribute SG back in June. It had 24 fets, the thick neck profile, P90s, and just played/sounded great. However I didn't buy it so I could afford my Bassman instead. I think I made the better decision.

Re: Post you Gibson SG

Ok, so first I was delighted to hear that Gibson produces "traditional" guitars again in 2016. Look, I'm not saying anything against the modernised stuff, it's great as long as people can choose between that and "traditional" Gibsons. Offering both in 2016 seemed a great idea.

But then, Gibson SG Special T(raditional) only with mini-humbuckers? Why?? Why not offer an ordinary SG Special? It's not like they didn't have space in their lineup for one. Is Gibson trying to force me into buying used or Epiphone? Or what? In 2015, Epiphones were the better Gibsons, and apparently in 2016, they still are. WTF?

My 92 SG Special I've had since new. Doesn't get played much these days but sounds pretty good. Has Slash pickups in it now which really sound great.

What kind of tradition is a SG with mini hums supposed to follow?

WTF Gibson?

Come on now; it's common guitar knowledge that many SG Specials of the mid-1970's had mini humbuckers.

With small humbuckers, stop tailpiece, small block inlays, headstock volute, and oar-sized headstock, these guitars are obviously what the new Special Ts are based on. Not exact, of course...but no Gibson outside of the Historic line is really anywhere close to a true reproduction anyhow, and the SG Special T isn't supposed to be one anyhow.

There's really no need to ***** and moan. The model won't last very long, and there is a glut of P90 or full-sized humbucker powered SG Specials on the used market, if that's what you want. You can score incredible deals on them; hell, I got my 2012 SG Special brand new for $469 out the door, brand new! The Ts are likely relatively ****ty in quality anyhow, if they are anything like Gibsons of similar price points in the past 10–12 years. In other words, you probably shouldn't buy one regardless of the specs.

It has a poo stain on the back.
