pot question for JB

So I know that the JB is preferred with a 250k tone pot...but does that include a 250k volume pot as well? Seems to me like it would sound too skinny. Help?

It depends on the person. It's best to try both pots and/or various capacitors. Me, I actually LIKE the JB with 500K pots and a .047cuf capacitor like SD recommends in the little manual that comes with it. But to each h[is|er] own.

Re: pot question for JB

for me the JB really shines with a 500K volume pot and no tone pot or caps
many use or have used the JB this way
jerry cantrell, george lynch, jake e lee, the guy in ratt, marty friedman to name a few:smokin:

I use mine with a 500k tone pot and a 250k volume pot, with 2 old Lawrence humcanceling strat pickups. I also split the JB. I think I get a balanced tone. But I play more classic rock, blues & country.

yeah iu think the stle one plays is a big factor of what pots you should use
for metal and hard rock the 500K with no tone is best
for more mellow styles
a 250K is better:smokin:

Re: pot question for JB

I play hard rock... the only way a JB is going in any guitar I own, is with a 250k volume pot. I like how the 250 tames the highs.

Re: pot question for JB

I am curently using it with 250k pots on volume and tone. But I want to change it the 500k.I find it a bit darkand I honestly find it not shining. What kind of tome do you like and dont like?

Re: pot question for JB

I'd try it first with 500K volume and tone controls. If it has to much prescence you can try it with 250K.

The Custom Custom is a very smooth pickup with lots of mids and no one ever complains that it sounds to bright with 500K pots.

If you use the JB with 250K pots it will have less bite than a Custom Custom with 500K pots.

In other words, 250K pots make the JB a very smooth and warm sounding pickup.

Thanks for the input guys, I am actually going for more of a hard rock maybe metal type sound. I dont play much blues or country

Re: pot question for JB

I'd go for the 500K, that's what i use in my guitars...and you can easily get a Metal sound out of the JB! I like having the 500k, you can always turn down the tone knob to tame the treble, it's better to have 500K, that way you always have the option :-). In my opinion...

Re: pot question for JB

I have the JB in my Frankienstrat with 500k pots and a .022mf cap. It is a killer sounding guitar.

It really depends on your guitar, amp, ears and other things. I'd start with 500k pots unless your rig is really bright.
