Okay boys im going head first into changing my first PUPs it will be awhile though. Anyways I have decided on a set of Lawrences 500XL and a 500R From Bill and Becky. Now the 500XL REQUIRES 500k pots. I went to the Gibson Forum asked somebody there and they said the general rule of thumb is that single coils use 250k pots and Humbuckers use 500k pots.

Simple enough I guess....but I have heard you guys say you have 200-300k stock pots in your Pauls. Now im confused and im not going to buy this Lawrence PUP, put it in my guitar, and have it sound like garbage, because im unsure of the pots that I have.

Please help my first PUP exchange to go smooth! It's giving me a good excuse to visit my Dad and tip a few back or drink some Jack Daniels. It's been a hard year and Im getting a decent tax return. Im excited with these PUPS hope they live up to the expectations.

I've seen 300K pots in Les Paul Studios that are older than yours. I don't know what they use in them now. You can measure them if you have a multimeter or they might even be labled if you look carefully.

I'd replace them with 500K CTS if they are 300K or less.

If your studio uses that big grounding plate inside the control cavity you're going to need long shaft pots.

Go with what the manufacturer says! "When in doubt - read the instructions"

Lew - I've read a few people who said they put in a fairly hot pup with a lot of high end and the 500k pot sounded too bright in the maple top pauls. Just a matter of taste I suppose. I was actaully thinking of going 500k on my neck pup and 300k on my bridge when I add a distortion. Your thoughts?

And where do you touch the leads to check the pots rating?

Re: POT Questions For 2003 LP Studio.

My thoughts are that compared to Strat and Tele pickups, which I prefer, paf style humbuckers lack highs to begin with...so anything less than 500K for both volume and tone pots sounds wooly and muffled to me. But it's all personal preference. The overwealming majority seems to prefer 500K for humbuckers. Lew

Im opening Her up now.......Went back to the gibson Forum too. Someone has got to know by the year and model I have. I don't have a meter to test it here. My dad has got one though, but thats not going to help me when I make my order. How much do 1M pots cost anyways? I might as well go balls out right? What kind of advise could you give me on that?

Re: POT Questions For 2003 LP Studio.

Your tone will be brighter with 1M. Go with 500K...that's normal. Lew

Re: POT Questions For 2003 LP Studio.

Should I just get new POTS all the way around? Or Cross my fingers that I have 500K pots. When I 0pen the back cover and look at them they just have the Gibson LOGO......I hate roadblocks! I was just going to simply order those Lawrences then Visit the old man when they arrived(he has all the tools). Never Soldered anything in my life, though Im pretty handy.

I also printed up the Chaos Soldering tips: and read it.
