Pot value for HSS pickup combo?

Re: Pot value for HSS pickup combo?

Depends on the pickups. Bright PAF types such as the Pearly Gates Bridge or Pearly Gates + and some high output types like the JB work fine with 250k pots. Some humbuckers need 500k pots though. Single coils usually work fine with 500k volume pots as long as it is also connected to a tone pot through a .05 cap instead of a .022 cap.

What many guys do is use 500k pots, and wire the switching so that when the single coils are selected, it also puts a resistor across the volume pot to bring the pot value down to 250k. There are articles and wiring diagrams showing how to do this out there.

I have 250s on my HSS setups but I like my tone on the darker side. If it is a PU replacement use what is in there see how you like it and go from there. There is no right and wrong, experiment.

Yeah, what HSS combo are you planning on using? I personally just used a 500k across everything. A lot of humbuckers sound kind of dull and dead with 250k, and a lot of single coils sound too bright and tinny with 500k, though I adjusted by using warmer single coils.

I have 2 Fat 50's single coils and a Duncan CustomCustom all wired with 300k pots, and I think it works great.

Re: Pot value for HSS pickup combo?

i like 500k for humbuckers but i have found some humbuckers sound fine with 250k pots. the 500k opens up higher frequencies across all of the strings. with 1M, even more so.

my HSS strat has a 250k volume pot for the singles and a 500k volume for the humbucker. the singles sound really bad with 500k. they sound nothing like single coils and more like humbuckers, believe it or not. so i stick with 250k for the singles.

i prefer to do cleans with singles so i can adjust the volume low on the guitar, them the HB volume would be high. this works well for non master volume amps. it's like channel switching with the pickup selector.

as for the tone knob, it's not missed.

now to my understanding single coils with 500k pots make them emphasize the high-end even more making them sound thin, and NOT humbucker sounding. Am I missing something here.
